Ive been thinkin about a little Ford Festiva or somethin 3 cylinder. 40+ mpg.
But not even sure i can aford one if i find one, but in the same place i can buy a lot of diesel, for the cost of a car, maintance on it, insurance, and gas in it.
I dont know.... im gettin kinda bumbed with all these high prices of everything too

I haven't seen a Festiva on the road in a long, long time. Might as well try for a Focus, since Max said his gets 33 mpg. As far as high diesel prices, I've usually found the best prices at Murphy Oil (WalMart) in this area. They are 10-25 cents per gallon cheaper.

Hate to say it but a truck that is fully capable of getting 16-18 mpg doesnt just fall off to 6 mpg overnight wihtout some MAJOR symptoms alerting you to the root of the problem.

Other than the crap fuel economy, it runs as it always has. I can nail it down to the DAY it went to crap, and the only thing different than any other, was I purchased fuel.

If I happen to warm it up in the morning, I can hear the EBPV open & close, if I happen to just hop in it and drive it, I can feel the EBPV opening & closing as I drive down the street.

I'm going to change the oil on it today, and if I get real barney, I'll change the tires. On my way home, I'll run the 10 miles out of my way and get fuel from another station.

Just as I typed this, I got an idea... I'll stick the 4-gas probe up the tailpipe just for chits & giggles... my truck was built w/o a cat, so I'll be looking straight into the butthole of the engine... I should have NO Hc and an absolute scad of oxygen at idle... cruise should be less O2 but still very low Hc... I bet NOx is off the chart...

Im w/ Mike on this...the mpg isnt gonna go to **** over night.
at the same time i wouldnt rely on the over head mpg calculator
at this point either.

fill the tank completely<to the brim>, drive it and then go back and
fill it COMPLETELY (to the brim) AGAIN...calculate the mpg.

I cant imagine an oil change, fuel filter change OR a particular brand
of fuel having any significant impact on your mpg...if they did then
you would CLEARLY notice some drivablity changes.

changing tires could improve your mpg but short of DRAGGING locked up
wheels/tires i cant imagine changing your tires could DOUBLE (or 1/2) your
mpg....much less do it OVERNIGHT.

is the truck SMOKING <heavily> under throttle <heavy ? or light ?> what
about at idle ?

So am I. And every avenue I explore keeps bringing me back to fuel quality.

as fas as smoke, it belches a moderate cloud when it's first fired off, but it's cleared in a few seconds.

I know what your getting at, that's why I'm gonna 4-gas it today.

By no means am i TRYING to be anything but helpful and logical....

have you filled the truck (to the brim?) hows the fuel gauge working ?
usually when the sending unit (in tank float) is going back it starts off
a bit erratic...full one moment and something less the next....until
eventually it shows empty all the time.

the sending unit on our truck has a surface based contact/solder
that the wiper (float level contact) rubs across to provide the resistance
to the gauge to indicate the level.

the way the gauge is made (surface solder) and RUBBED it will eventally
WEAR the contact OFF (its a bean counter design if ive ever seen one).

i still think if its an injector issue in this brief a distance youd darn near
see fuel DRIPPING out the tail pipe...or coming out the valve crank case
from over flow.

any chance that someone could be siphoning the fuel when youre not home ?
