degas cap leaks

I recently purchase my F250 with a 6.0L. I conducted all the usual maintenance procedures and replaced the degas bottle (and cap) because I found a crack in it. I had thought that my leaking problem would have stopped with that replacement.

Lately I have been noticing the liquid level dropping in the degas and finding the indication that the coolant is coming out the cap (onto the brake booster, etc). I do not believe that there is a leak in my EGR cooler because I am not seeing 'white smoke' nor water in my oil. The engine and tranny temp indicators read normal. I can see the flow from the EGR cooler and it looks normal to me.
I don't over fill and my warranty is up, so the dealer is hopefully the last resort.


Any suggestions on what to look at?? I looked at some of the other threads but they really do not answer the question.

I don't want to wait for any major problems.

flash boiling, I think thats what its called. Could cause it. I am sure lots here will chime in.

A pressure test of the coolant system would be a start. The degaus cap should also hold 16psi . I believe when they do this they elevate the rear of truck and remove the EGR valve to check for cooler leak and prevent hydraulic cylinder lock?* Headgasket and or EGR cooler leak can be the typical culprit for loosing coolant. A minor HG leak doesn't always blow a lot of white smoke. Look for white smoke out of your tailpipe. I experienced the same thing. Replaced the Degas cause it was cracked. Later that week the level went down again. About that time I started noticing white smoke out the tailpipe on occasion. Turned out to be a bad EGR cooler housing. replaced it 8K miles ago about 6 months. cost me $2300 at the dealer. Guess what. It is happening again and it is out of warranty. this seems to be a common thing with the 6.0 that Ford ignores till someone lays a class action lawsuit on them. alot of the folks on here have installed a EGR cooler delete module. That may be my next step.

I lost alot coolant on a trip and the truck did not show any signs of a head problem so cleaned the EGR and put new o-rings in and have not had the problem any more. I now have a po299 code so I now get to pull the turbo and clean it next. Have to love your PSD to put up with this stuff.

yeah mine was doing the same thing but i could see water coming from the egr cooler so i jst kept filling her up for a weeek or wo before i could fix it ....did studs and the egr and cooler delete now hopefully no more problems$1900 bux well spent

I replaced the EGR and did not see any liquid inside. I don't see white smoke. I will have to check out the EGR cooler though to make sure.



This seems to be a common thing with the 6.0 that Ford ignores till someone lays a class action lawsuit on them.
I agree with you on this one.

Make sure your new degas bottle has the new level sticker or is the newer bottle with the lowered MAX/MIN indicators. FORD at some point lowered the MAX/MIN line where the coolant level needs to be when checked. Your bottle may be overfilled. If you post some pics I can tell you what you got, even the cap has been redesigned.

I did get the lower level indicator bottle. My first (cracked) one showed a higher MAX/MIN level. I will try to get a picture of it in the near future.

As I indicated in past posting after replacing the degas bottle and cap I have been getting high pressure over-flow, brown color antifreeze, but the temp gauge reads normal. I don't see any liquid in the EGR area (while replacing the EGR), nor do I get white smoke from the exhaust.
Ford records indicate that the water pump was replaced at 25K but no reason was give as to why.

I am not thinking that I am having any head gasket issues but I would like to know why the degas bottle is blowing out.
