hey Maxtor, i looked at the hypermax site, i found what they had to say very interesting.

Eliminate blown head gaskets with this assembly, and no machining needed. Works well with programmers and in-line modules. Keeps you truck from whistling like a tea kettle. If you run over 30 Psi of boost then this is what you need! We tested these at 500 BHP for 40 hours. Intermittent runs to 625 BHP
Gasket bodies are made from steel perforated sheet metal covered in graphite composite material with aircraft stainless combustion rings.
Applications: 2003-2006 Ford F-Series pickup and Excursion with 6.0L Power Stroke diesel.
NOTE: ALL TESTING WAS DONE WITH NEW STOCK BOLTS. IF YOU WANT TO USE STUDS OR ARE USING STUDS, DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK, DON'T ASK WHAT WE THINK OF STUDS , NEVER TESTED THEM OR NEEDED THEM.

what do the rest of you think about their statement? it looks like they are saying that you will not need head studs if you use their souped up head gaskets. could this be true?

OR, would it be even better to use their head gaskets and head studs?

The difference between A-1 studs and ARP studs is the material used. Tool steel to me is better than the 87whatever ARP uses in their ARP 2000 material. The only plus is the anodizing ARP does to help prevent corrosion, but no stock bolts that I know of come anodized.

As for Hypermax's comment...I don't really agree. The reason for studs in high performance applications is they stretch evenly. The only thing turning is the nut and the stud is only being pulled. The washers under the nut allow that and the studs are already threaded in the block. You can't do that with a bolt, there's torsional loads IMO on bolts. Boosted applications need studs but Hmax know alot more than this former redneck automotive machinist from Texas.

Oh I forgot....if you're not blowin' steam have you looked to see where the coolant is coming from? May be the water pump.

I know all the tests show that the tailgate does not decrease fuel mileage, but what I know is that after buying and installing the 5th wheel tailgate, my mileage went up almost 2 mpg. Before it was 19.2 and the latest was 21.02 going from Grants Pass Oregon to Redding Ca. That is at 2000 rpm and 70 mph.
We normally get 1.5 mpg better going from Oregon to Ca. than from Ca. to Oregon.

Sooo,,, If you are pulling things with a 5th wheel hitch, might as well try a 5th wheel tailgate. They are between $300 and $500 depending on quality.

thats a good question rooster. i know that the degaus bottle has coolant pukin out of it real good. there have been small wet places on the driveway a few mornings.

i guess head gaskets was just the first thing to enter my mind.

i really cant tell where else it may be coming from. the driver's part of the engine is pretty wet lookin after drving it for a while.

i have never thought about the water pump, it could be that, but again, im not sure.

gonna take the truck to the dealer up the road in the AM and see what they think.

ive heard the 08 tailgate wont fit right (sticks out).

the ONLY way to determine if youve got a head gasket issue
is by testing the oil to determine if theres coolant in the oil
AND to sniff the degaus bottle for combustion gases.

beyond that youre left to pull the heads off and INSPECT
the gaskets signs of a leak.

it seems to mean if you had a head gasket leak you wouldnt
be seeing wet spots on the driveway....it seems to me youve
more likely got a LEAK (water pump ?)

i hope it is only the water pump. that would be a relief i guess.

i will let yall know tomorrow after i take her to the ford dealer.

and while im there, im gonna see if they will let me take the tailgate off of one of the 2008's and see if it will actually fit my truck.

if not, i will just get another one like the original.
