Turbo Farts, Engine Heat, ......

This weekend I went with the guys to the races in Bristol and I drove my 2005 F-350 SD Turbo and we were pulling a 26 ft pull behind Camper that weighed about 3500 lbs which should be a walk in the park for this truck. It was very clear from the campgrounds that the Ford F250/350 SD was by far the truck of choice there, but mine had challanges this weekend.

It seemed to struggle on the hills and several times I would smell coolant and then look down and see the engine temp moving to High. I was also occasionally getting the turbo farts that I read about in other threads. When I let off the gas, the temp would return to normal in 5 to 10 seconds and stay normal. After stopping to fill up with gas, we were getting back onto I-40 and when I accelerated, I heard a loud pop and then had loss of power. The temp was ok, so I limped 10 miles(mostly downhill) to the Ford dealer in Harriman, TN. The middle plastic turbo hose had busted. They fixed that and put it on the computer and saw no other additional codes.

That got us back on the road, but I continued to have the problem of occasional Turbo farts and coolant puking out of the resevior and momentary temp rises. All of these occured going up hills. I tried to go easy on the truck and not stress it.

Doing the research online today, I have seen several threads where they say coolant coming out of the resevior is a potential sign of a blown head gasket?? The truck seems to do just fine when I dont have a load on it. Is there an easy way to determine if it is a blown head gasket? Could it be a sticking thermostat which causes the engine to get hot and then to lose coolant?? I am taking it to the dealer tomorrow and I was just wanting to give them some ideas to look for. This truck should be able to pull 3500lbs without any efffort. Thanks for the help and ideas!!

Hello Jay and Welcome To SSD.com. I live just west of you about 165 miles on I-30.
Like you said that trailer should be a walk in the park for your truck. I pull 16000 + with my 06 6.0 and it's just about a walk in the park for it. What dealer do you take it to in Memphis? Hope you have a good one over there.
I am sure there will be others come by and help you out a lot more than I can.
Good Luck and :usa :welcome3 :welcome :welcome2 :welcome3 :goodluck

the erratic boost (probably bucking & jerking) sounds like its EGR related...
mine only did it WITH a load (towing cars)...my egt's also were up
and the erractic boost / bucking occurred at steady or even slight increases
of the throttle.

youll need to check the for engine codes...we'll leave it at that for now
dont wanna scare you unnecessarily.

some may say youve got more serious issues (gaskets or egr cooler)
ill bet your issue in at least an egr valve.

how full is your coolant degas bottle ? it should only be filled to the
minimum mark (theres a tsb on this)....filling it to the "FULL" mark will
cause it to "puke".

may i also suggest that you get some gauges...egt & trans would
help you diagnose problems in the furture.

Thanks

Thanks Doug for the Welcome. I took it to Dobbs Ford on Highway 64 near the Galaria Mall this morning. I am waiting to hear the diagnosis.

Several of us are heading to Degray State Park in Ark this weekend. I love to camp in Arkansas!! Lots of very nice campgrounds and very CLEAR water! Hopefully it will not be 100+ degrees this weekend!

Diagnosis from Ford Dealer

I dropped the truck off this morning and explained the issues to them and they just called and said that it was ready. They said that they had to reprogam the PCM and they had to "redo the coolant" because it was too high. The only reason that it would be too high is that the Ford Dealer in Harriman, TN added some last Thursday.

I explained that I could only get it to do this under a load climbing a hill and they said that they the ability to test it that way. He could not recreate the overheating problem and didnt know what that could be.

I have 34k miles on this truck. Could the EGR be dirty after that many miles? I read that it is not good to let the truck idle for long periods of time and this can cause the EGR valve to get gunked up?

I guess that I will load up a camper and go find a hill somewhere. There are not too many of those near Memphis. I love an excuse to go camping!!

Thanks again for the help!!

the only way to determine the state of the egr valve is to pull it and
visually inspect it.

you should read the TWO related articles here FDDTS - Articles

if you pull the egr valve you should change the orings and base
gasket

Well good luck with all that! my 04 had a similar problem, minus the coolant. dealer never could duplicate it, i started it one morning, tons of white and blue smoke were pouring out, and it had no power, i drove straight to the dealer withit smokinbad still, once i got in the drive it smoothed out and stopped smoking!!! :( i culdnt blieve it, and noone saw it..so they went and checked codes and found nothing, i just got rid of it and bought a dang dodge...(biggest mistake) hopefully my next 6.0 will be better.

I hear ya

I absolutely love the truck and hopefully that will fix the problem. I have had similar situations with white smoke pouring out of the back in the past and it runs rough, but then it stops and runs fine again. Someone suggested water in the top fuel filter so I had that cleaned out and I have not had the problem in several months. After the turbo hose blew up last week and I lost power, I had black and white smoke coming out but I assumed that was something with the hose. It ran like a champ last night and this morning but I didnt have a load on it. Maybe I will get lucky here. I may try another dealer here in town and see what they say just to get a second opinion.

Does anyone know - is there a number of hours when the EGR generally needs to be cleaned or replaced on average??
