First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, our baby cribs were covered with bright colored lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soda pop with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because......

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's, X-boxes, no video games at all, no 99 channels on cable, no video tape movies, no surround sound, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
made up games with sticks and tennis balls and although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever!

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned

HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL!

And YOU are one of them!
CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

and while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it?!

Well said. I was a post war (WWII) baby and I lived just like you said. We didn't kill anyone and we weren't killed ourselves. We played hard and came home tired and went to bed after supper.

I would like to add kids of the 70's also! We didn't have DVD players in our mini vans! Text messaging our friends, drive by shootings, crack, or any of the goofy sh*t kids have to worry about now! I'm only 33, and I can see how crazy people have become. Where does it stop?

And we learned exactly where to kick the metal plate on the concrete street light pole to keep it off for another 15 mins so we could finish the game of baseball we were playing :D :D

And - we played football in the street - played "smear the queer" - played real "dodge ball" - and, played Army on Mount Trashmore :sweet (for those who grew up around Virginia Beach - you know what Mount Trashmore was  )

I was born in '67 and every bit of that fits me to a tee.

I'm glad to see the "be home before the streetlights came on" was not just my mom.

Oh yeah, and Indiana Jones had nothing on us, we found all kinds of cool places to go explore and things to bring home.

How did we make it??

In the mid 70's I would jump my car every day on this 10' high railroad track with a business exit on the blind side of it with no spotter! They had a stop sign 1000' or so before it to take off from & would just hold the car to the floor then 30 to 40' before the peak let off for a second then nail it again to downshift to second gear to give the extra push :burnit & wee!Always had a passenger no seat belts pinned against the roof!It was a 66 Dodge Dart 4 door slant 6 & the ballance was perfect would usually land almost flat.Probably jumped it 200 times +.Had somes girls wanted a ride one time in my parents 73 LTD wagon 390 & took them where we would ride our motorcross bikes & jumped a few hills with them, never asked for a ride again.A friend wanted to follow (no experence except riding with me) thought it looked easy took his Ambassador first jump folded the car up so bad from the landing that you couldn't open any doors to get out:D :roflmao
Guess that's why my back & neck hurt so much now:(
Don't get to see many of my friends that I hung with back then any more most moved away but when I do see them when we get together it always comes up & we laugh untill we go to the store in the Excursion with the smoke flying to pick up some more beer with the Grand Funk cranked up & they still see I'm crazy!Of course wee all have our helmets on!!!

Very well said. I'm 1960 vintage, and can remember playing "Army" with BB guns...there was never any question if you "Got" someone. Schwinn Stingrays, front yard tackle football, your first kiss and first taste of beer were all rights of passage. I can still remember Grandma's Packard, Dad's International panel truck, and my oldest brothers souped up GTX.
