hi a buddy of mine calls me up and says for me to run ag diesel in my truck(the stuff they use for tractors) it's cheaper and a friend of his runs it in his 99 dodge. i thought fuel was for tractors for a reason? is there a performance aspect to running this or is it ok to run it?

In a van down by the river...
The 7.3 will happily burn red/ag/tractor/off-road fuel, but it's just every so slightly ILLEGAL. If the fuel is sold for offroad/farm use, it's not taxed like on-road diesel is and should you get your tank dipped or fuel filter inspected (the dye sticks around for quite a while) IIRC the fine is somewhere around $10,000 from the feds.

Clarify with you friend he's talking about ag-diesel and not bio?:dunno

If he's talking about ag, the risk is not worth the return. Fines are WAY to high. It's my understanding that ag-diesel(off road) is the same as the #2 we buy at the pumps, just had red dye in it. But, I would stay away if I were you.:2c

Ag/off road diesel is nothing more than regular #2 with a die pack thrown in after the tanker truck fills up. It will run fine in your truck.

On the down side is it's 100% illegal.......ie-you will be guilty of tax evasion which can make you the lucky recipant of a $10,000 fine.

It ain't worth it......................... :(

Diesel for agricultural use is non-taxed dyed fuel. Ruby Red is what we call it on the farm. Construction companies also use this fuel for equipment, anything that does not drive on federally funded roads can use this fuel.

It's your truck, do what you want, but when a :cop wants to "dip" your tank and you have dyed fuel, expect to pay.

I've been dipped a couple times, once when I was following a combine with a fuel wagon of dyed fuel. The :cop asked to pop the hood and look at the fuel filter, I was good to go and happily complied. I have put 5 gallons of died fuel in my tank to make it home from the farm once, the dye stays for a LONG time!

do they even check it anywhere in oregon? never heard of "dipping" by a cop or anything. many people i know run it. we always said if we ever got in trouble, we'd say that we ran empty up in the hills and some loggers filled us up with off road so we could make it back to town. me and my dad finished off our last 500 gallon tank about a year ago because it's still more expensive than veg oil. if there was no off road in the tank and they found red dye in the filter they couldn't prove you ran it while "on road". just say you were "off road" that time.
