Just wondering about this? I know some of our 7.3's use some oil between changes and some don't. Mine uses about 1-1 1/2 quarts between changes using Rotella T 15w40.

During next years cold season, I plan on going with the Rotella T Synthetic 5w40. Could my oil consumption increase?

It should not increase. It is the 40 part of the oil's weight that you should be concerned while running, and not the 5 part (for cold starts).

Thanks Dave

I was thinking on those lines also. Just concerned. Always hearing sometimes synthetics may increase oil useage. Funny how some PSD's use oil while others don't. Luck of the draw I guess. I was told by a Ford Tech a few years back, some PSD's use a quart or two between oil changes which is no concern according to Ford.

That amount of oil useage is not a big deal, you have 14 to 16 qts and you are using 1/16th of that. A small amount. You should use some oil between oil changes.

Dave,

Funny thing, I was reading some information on Mobil Delvac 15w40. A PSD owner stated his 1996 was using 2 quarts between changes with Rotella 15w40. After changing to Delvac 15w40 no more oil consumption problems. I have never used Delvac 15w40 but I can believe it is an execellent oil. I can't understand how one brand can reduce consumption that much?

That is a good one, bot. I have not heard that one. I am surprised that it would vary that much just by changing from a Syn to a NON-Syn oil. I have heard it the other way but not your way. (Not Wendy's).

I'm trying to figure that one out myself. I guess there can't be a whole lot of difference between major 15w40 oils Delvac vs Rotella/Rotella vs Delvac?

I did notice my oil drain plug has a drip of oil now and then on it. I use the copper type washer, is that the cause? I don't want to over tighten the drain plug.
