Hey Jeff, thanks for straightening them out on that. You are ablolutely correct. But I can also tell you that switching brands of oil can cause oil consumption, or the lack there of.

I am not sure if it does or not. It has been a few years since I installed mine. You could reuse the copper washer or get one at an auto parts store. I would get a new washer.

i worked in a quarry for15 years, and we always used the delvac oil in all the equipment.when i bought my sd naturally i used the delvac.when i decided to switch to the rotella syn,my truck used almost 3 qts between changes.i went back to the delvac, and i only use about a quart and a half between changes. the delvac is good stuff!

well my expierence is exactly the oposite, when i bought my '99 7.3 the guy who had it used ford (motorcraft) i changed to Rotella 15/40 and then for another reason about a year later went to 15/40 Delo 400, it started using about 1 1/2 qts between changes, I then went to Rotella Syn and it doesnt use a drop between changes I use it year round and the truck seems to run smoother quieter and just all around better.... (probably imagination) Ive been using the Rotella Syn for about 3 years now and will stick with it.
no leaks no drips no drops.

I just checked my oil today. Have the Rotella T 5-40 in it. I notice it turns blacker faster than the Castrol 15-40 I previously ran. I only have about 400 miles on it since last week's change, and it's kinda dark already. With the 15-40 castrol it stayed pretty clean looking for about 2k. Not sure if that's a good thing though. I currently have 8,800 miles on the truck. But the truck does run and start better with the 5-40 rotella. I plan on trying the Mobil TDT 5-40 next change and then sticking with one of them; rotella syn or mobil tdt.

As your engine gets miles on it, it will blacken the oil faster than before. I noticed my engine's oil was still transparent at 3000 miles when it was new. Now 3000 after an oil changed it is black. It is not the oil, but the by products of diesel combustion. Soot mainly.

Also, you never really get all the old oil out either, so it adds to the color of the new oil when mixed. Like trying to get rid of all the died diesel in a tank without running it completely dry.
