They are located where spark plugs would go if a gas motor. They are deep into the head. You can test the voltage at the plug that connects to the glow plug. :)

okay. thanks daveben. I kinda figured that, but wasn't sure. I will have to check that tomorrow.

ok. I'm pretty sure the starter was burnt out. I tried to jump the starter across the solenoid and it didn't spin. So, I popped it out and took it up to Orielly's and got a new one. Popped it in and was securing nut to the small ignition wire and the post and all snapped off and was just hanging by the wire. these remans are crap!! anyway, I went and picked up another one here in town and installed it. The truck still doesnt crank. I'm guessing it's the relay inside the truck on the fuse panel, or the glow plug controller as Daveben stated. Once I find the culprit, my plan is to keep the reman starter until I can locate the oil leak. once that is fixed, I will remove the reman starter and go with an OEM starter. Unless I find out about a better one in the mean time. Thanks for the replies on this one guys. More troubleshooting to come tomorrow.

There is a big starter solenoid bolted to the right fender, with two BIG cables going to it. Try this first. Oh, Dave works great.

well, here some pics I managed to take tonight. They aren't the best and I'm not sure they will help, but I figured it's worth a shot. Thanks for looking.

another-as you can see, the leak doesn't look too bad from down here.

the next four are shots from the top of the motor. even though I've had my truck for 5 years now, I have yet to learn what all the parts and pieces are here. I know where the turbo, intake spider, and fuel bowl are and that's about it lol. Anybody got a good diagram of any of the parts shown below in the pics?

as you can see, there is definitely some oil caked in different areas in the pics. any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Oil goes to and from the turbo. One is the source line under pressure and the other is a return line that is not under a lot of pressure. These are the only lines on top of the motor and any leaks from them will run down the back of the motor and end up on the starter. This is FYI.

1. oil vapors in pcv system -> boost leaks -> cakes on oily residue at piping clamps.

2. low oil can cause no start, but like REALLY low. remember oil is the life blood of the injection system.

3. all that piping- hard to describe online. red hose and green hose are vacuum control for the wastegate and the MAP sensor.

4. glow plug system has nothing to do with cranking, it will affect no start. so first things first. get crank, then worry about fire.

1. are you saying this could cause a no crank condition, or just the source of my oil leak?

2. I did check my oil and I was two quarts low. That's a first. I changed my oil back in February with Rotella T6 synthetic and check it every other month or so. Last time I checked is was in October and only had about 6,000 miles since the last oil change, and it was fine then. anyway, I added two quarts and waited an hour. but still no crank.

3. Thanks for the info.

4. roger on the Glow plug system. I need a crank first before messing with that. But I do want to address the code that I'm getting once it does crank again.

thanks for the all the info Dpantizis

Now, I jumped under this morning with the new starter and jumped the solenoid. The starter spins, but thats it. I wasnt sure if that would crank or turn over the motor, so I had the ignition turned on so the glow plugs were warm(if they are still working lol!).

Does anyone know if jumping the solenoid at the starter would crank the motor? or are there other things that have to be primed for that to happen?

When you say right fender Dave, are you talking about the driver or passenger side? I assume you mean right side while sitting in the driver's seat and because the starter is on the passenger side, but I just wanted to make sure. I looked but wasnt able to locate the solenoid on the passenger side.
