Well, if you ever get tired of the cold (I lived 18 years in the Owosso area, down by Lansing/Flint growing up) there is plenty of work down here in East L.A. (eastern lower Alabama). Starting pay for A&P's fresh out of school is $24 before shift differential pay. Great BCBS bennies as far as I can tell (I'm a Tri-Care Prime guy, being retired Mil). Easy work but unfortunately, we don't have any heater hangars!!

Are the other students younger than you? Not saying your too old, but I know I've seen alot of what I would call "age descrimination" in hiring around here. Good Luck! Hopefully your experience is a positive in you finding steady employment!:sweet

One never knows if or when a major career change may be required. Most of my classmates are significantly younger than me. In fact, people in my class over the age of 25, account for about 2/3 of the students. I think the reason may be that the demands and discipline of the program require an older person. I think about all of the dropouts were maybe 21 or less. We started with about 45 folks in August 2009. We are down to 19 now.

I'm the oldest in the class and the only one with a grandchild. :D The next in line is another retired Air Force sargeant. In fact, I am older than two of the three professors in my program. For some reason, professors don't like being called "sonny" by their students. :dunno:dunno

12 an hr really ?

Yep, but again that's for a part time student with out any kind of FAA certificate.

The expectation of this particular employer is that once students complete school, they will get their A&P certificate. (That is why they specify NMU Aviation Maintenance students in the hiring notice.) Once that happens, the employee will then get moved from a repairman position to a certificated A&P mechanic position.

Mrs TG works the mid-shift. When I'm done with school, I might as well try to get on the same shift so we'll get to see each other. If I can get a night shift and after I get my A&P, my starting pay as an A&P will be about $17/hour. Within a couple of years, I should be making about $20/hour.

The cost of living isn't too terribly high around here. My cable bill is more than the electric and heating bill combined. So $20/hour is pretty damned decent.

Hey TG, Talked to a friend of mine this morning who works for the Michigan DOT. He's the regional Engineer for the UP. Said y'all had about 110" of snow so far this year. Its not quite as cold down here in the winter but it is a long way from the grandkid.
