I recently purchased a 2005 F350 SD, and the previous owner had a nice sound system installed which was partially removed before I got the truck. I was left with upgraded front/rear speakers, and 2 tweeters installed in the front doors.
The wires are still run under the floor to the back for the amp which is no longer installed. I have installed a Kenwood DNX7100 and now would like to install an amplifier and subs. I have a chance to pick up a Phoenix Gold QX300.4 and a Kenwood KAC-646 for next to nothing. I plan on purchasing a sub box to go behind the back seat, and 2 Kenwood KFC-XW1000F subs. Are the amps any good?? I was thinking the Kenwood would power the 4 6x9's and tweeters, and the PG to power the 2 10" subs?

It has been way too long since I did anything with amplifiers to remmber if they will do the job.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

ok as i understand it im expected to reply to these type of posts ;)

the thing you have to look at on the amps is the THD ratings...any
less than .05% is good but the lower the better...as far as amps go...
JL Audio is probably the best if not one of the top 2 or 3...

free is always better ;) and from the specs it looks to be a pretty
quiet amp < .02% thd Phoenix Gold QX300.4 Four Channel Amplifier

i dont see any real specs on the Kenwood KAC-646....ive not had
very good experiances w/ their stuff...theyve been somewhat noisey
in my opinion...but again the price (free) is right...

you dont say what truck you have...super cab, regular cab or crew cab...
either way if youve got REALLY limited space for subs....i had to make a
custom box and even then i was REALLY limited in the size of sub i could
fit...you COULD modify the seat mounting for more depth behind the
seat but theres nothing that you can BUY to do it...its all custom at
that point.

if you have a crew cab youll have limited under seat mounting options
(because of the fold out tray system)

the 6x9 speakers you mention wont fit w/out cutting...the oe size
is 6x8/5x7 the KFC-XW1000F should mount fine...nice and shallow
(cant say ive ever heard 'em) i have a single solobaric L5 10" and it
barely fits

what ever you do confirm that the wiring left behind is in good condition
and FUSED (or circuit braker) up by the battery...and it wouldnt hurt
to fuse the amps AGAIN near their mounting point from the distribution
block.

plan your install...

your gonna have to cut the carpet away from the back wall (if you
mount it in a crew cab, behind the seat) and you NEED those
vents in the back wall...keep at LEAST one of 'em or youll play
hell getting the doors shut.

im making alot of assumptions...tell us what truck you have and
we can help more.

Check out this site for a seat lift if it is a extended cab. Thats what I did. that away I didn't have to spend alot on a custom box. I remember mine being around $100 then I bought slim generic 12" box that would fit under for $20 a piece. I ended up spending $140-160 instead of $300 for custom box.

JL Audio makes a center seat SUB box...uses your existing cover
(from the factory seat) so its a perfect match...but it renders the
seat completely unusable for anything more than sitting on it for
a few minutes (aka hard as a freegin' rock) !

they have an option if you have a center console (box) too.

last i looked the seat replacement box was 450 ish !

Thanks for the replies...sorry forgot to mention my truck is a crew cab. I have seen a few sites that offer custom made boxes to go either behind the seat or under the back seat downward firing. I didnt know the vents in the back were to allow the doors to close properly, thanks for mentioning this!

I would prefer a box to go under the rear seats if they are any good??

SOUND OFF AUDIO - F250CREWUTS - 2004 - 2006 FORD F250-F350 CREW CAB TRUCK DUAL DOWNFIRE SUBWOOFER ENCLOSURE at Sound Off Audio

Ford F250 F350 Supercab Custom underseat Enclosure - (item 270149694957 end time Aug-04-07 20:45:08 PDT)

So the Phoenix Gold then to power the subs, and the Kenwood for the other speakers sounds like it will work.

you dont have any room under the seats...you could pull out the
front center seat and use the jl box (but imo its over priced)

those that have the jl audio stealth box rave about it...and they DO
make good amps & speakers.

i SERIOUSLY doubt if that box behind the seat (link you provided) will
fit...and i KNOW it wont fit w/ the grill.

youre better off builting your own box for behind the rear seat...that
or have it done at some local shop...shouldnt cost you more than 100
bucks for the box, carpeted to match.

the box im running is TIGHT, but it works well....10" sub is barely a
sub...and the problem is there such little depth you dont have many
choices for behind the rear seat...some folks are using the radial/flat
type subs (pioneer makes 'em and some one else).

im using a square 10" solobaric (L5)...its 20% more area than a
round sub....it can hit pretty hard and one is enough for me....i wouldnt
wanna give up the entire area behind the back seat (need some place to
put your jack etc.

Oh, I thought I could take out the metal fold out floor thing under the back seats and replace with a sub box?

you can remove that tray system (youll need a T55-PLUS)...

look at the photos in my signature (links) youll see how i removed
the tray system and STILL dont have very much useable space...

the problem is that the floor is NOT flat...infact theres very little
contiguous area that is flat...and certainly not enough flat space
(under the tray systems) to mount even an AMP, much less a
sub/box.

any sub box that you consider will NEED volume...the jl stealth box
is probably the BEST solution (how ever like most things theres
a trade off (cash & usable seat)

--> test fitting of the 1/2 board (cut to fit) NO CARPET <YET> !

DIY-UN-CARPETED-AMP-BOARD.jpg

--> finished w/ CARPET <has since changed> the amps actually contact the seat bottom a little...at
the back of the seat/hinge. i can BARELY fit a 1/2 roll of FLATTENED paper towels under the board...between
the floor and the board...and the JACK / CRANK handle BARELY fits under the board (because there is almost
ZERO SPACE)

DIY-CARPETED-AMP-BOARD2.jpg

heres some ideas for mounting your speakers...(above photo you
can see speakers mounted on lower portion of the REAR door.

FRONT-DOORS-small.jpg

REAR-Tweets-smallpic.jpg

REAR-DOORS.jpg

heres my 10inch L5 (Kicker Solobaric)...the carpet has been cut away
from the rear wall (behind the speaker)...yet preserved on the other seat
side...i REALLY need to move the seat forward (and im investigating some
spacers that might allow the seat to be raised and moved forward 1/2
and inch or so)...see how the speaker has slightly contacted the rear of
the seat back...theres just SO LITTLE room/depth.

please fill out your profile, tell us where you live (if you like) and what
model/year & configuration truck you have...it would be helpful in this
thread and your future conversations.

pictures are always helpful & certainly welcome !

mu uncle had a 03 f-250 crew cab with one 10" 200 watt amp behind his rear seat. it was pretty tight it made good kickdrum bass and a little lower. not thumping loud. i dont remember how much space is behind the rear seat is it possible to trun 2 10" i think that would better than run. how about mtx truck boxes
