That big nut as you called it is the banjo bolt IIRC its 1 1/4" and yes you can change the pump with out pulling the turbo unless yours is the california model then I'm not sure as I haven't done one of those yet

When you back the Banjo bolt out there are two washers you want to keep or replace. They go on either side of the ring that connects the fuel lines together. I ended up using a dab of RTV to hold the inside one in place while I slid the bolt back thru when putting it back together. When you do it take your time and you should be able to get it done, probably a few scraped knuckles.
Good luck,
Craig

I beleive that there is some kind of vibration or pulse dampener on the fuel lines at the back of the pump on the cali models that makes removing the turb nescessery so if it looks like you can get it out go for it

under the turbo pedestal there is a black disk that says Bosch on it in white letters. Look below the pedestal and you should see it if it is there. It is right up touching under it.

Yeah, the pulse damper is hard to miss. If you can see your banjo bolt then you don't have it. It should only be on CA models with split shots.
