Hi,

I belive I have found the issue with my diesel going quiet on me. I read on another site of a guy who described, to a tee my problem and many people said its the EGR sticking wide open, and only some times, like whats happening to me. If this is the case does this make sense? Also can an EGR be cleaned to prevent sticking or do I need it replaced? Expensive? Any info and suggestions appreciated, this is driving me nuts!

Cheers
Jeff

You can remove and clean the EGR and save a bunch of bucks. Take it out and using carb cleaner, brush it clean. The EGR is located just behind the Elbow for the intake air to the engine. Sounds completely plausible.

Hey,

It has 90,000 KM so around 55,000 miles I think that is? I do not idle it alot however I will be over the winter since im plowing. I plan to do the high idle mod for when im prolonging idle. I know what you mean when your coasting down but this happens to mejust when im sitting, but only some times.

It will usually start from when I turn the key to when I shut off, but if I turn it on again it wont nessesiarily happen. This is what the other guy posted:

"My truck is completely stock. This morning while rolling through a parking garage I noticed when my truck dropped down to idle, it would go super quiet. It has 23K miles and has been nearly perfect. The truck seemed like it was running fine, but the idle was way more quiet that usual. A quick blip of the throttle and the sound was back to normal. At the next turn in the garage, it went quiet again. When I parked, it did the same. It didn't do it on the way home tonight that I could tell. It still has very nice acceleration, and seems to run fine."

So I will try cleaning the EGR i guessm doesn't hurt to do it even if its not the problem.

Cheers
Jeff

autoenginuity would allow you to TEST the egr valve and its position/range.

Isn't it extremely expensive?

well let me put it to you this way....

ONE outta warranty repair (or one a dealer can CONVINCE you is
not covered by warranty) will likely more than cover the cost of
the software.

*OR*

About THREE w/in (5/100k) warranty repairs will cover the cost
of the software.

*OR*

A day or two of an interrupted vacation (not including towing) should also
be able to justify the cost.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

or let me share w/ you what actually happened to ME...

I was on a long distance one day tow (1350mi)...performance
was off, egt's were up, boost was erratic...drivablity was
LESS than smooth...

Soon as i got home...I connected my laptop, pulled the (egr) code, tested
the egr valve & diagnosed the problem (in less than 20min)...i could
have replaced the valve (it had been cleaned less than 8k miles
earlier) in less than 30 (additional minutes).

Since i was still covered under the 3/36k warranty i figured id let
my dealer do the work (and save the expense of buying a new
egr valve)....I made an appointment, gave the dealer the code number
(which i was careful NOT to have cleared) and told 'em what the code
meant...

i wouldnt expect a dealer to trust my diagnoses...i would expect
'em to verify it....

in the end the dealer had the truck 3.5 days...and billed more than
500 bucks to FORD for the repair...i assume i would NOT have gotten
as good a discount on the repair.

If i'd have done the repair myself id have had less aggravation and
certainly would have had to be w/OUT my truck for even 1/2 a day
much less 3.5 days !

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Knowing my ECT & EOT are w/in the prescribed 20* and being able
to check any other of the over 400 sensors (thats engine data only,
and doesnt include all the other data points that can be monitored)...
gives me PEACE of MIND...
