Anyone with elementary age children in the Dallas public system? Im weighing a likely job offer that, if it happens, will very possibly be for Dallas. I used to live near Whiterock lake. At that time Richardson schools were fairly close and well thought of. That was over 6 years ago however.

Im apprehensive of the schools there from what I know of them. It will be a significant factor in whether I accept a position there or take a pass. I dont have a question per se, just looking for thoughts or input on DISD.

Thanks!

Hi Tx,
My sister works for the DISD and all I can say is move to the suburbs (Richardson, Plano, Frisco) and enroll your kids out there. Unless your kids are going to be at one of the Magnet schools in Dallas.
I base this on what my sister tells us, the kids in her class are out of control, very little support from the parents, and many teachers are just there for their eight hours and a pay check. Their administrators are unsupportive with teacher concerns and are reactive instead of pro-active. Is this the situation in every classroom and school in the DISD? No but it is disappointingly the story told by my sister and her friends over and over. My sister is only staying because of a contract she has, once that ends in December she is leaving.
My wife has been a teacher for 14 years going on her 15th, she won't go anywhere near the DISD, and neither will her friends who are teachers. She taught in Richardson for 9 years at White Rock Elementary, and loved it there. Richardson is still well thought of.
She now teaches in Forney (we moved) and has been happy out with this district, she has the occasional bad kid in class but the parents tend to be more supportive and her principal watches out for the teachers and keeps the kids in line. That is all I know to tell you. Sorry to paint such a dismal portrait of the DISD however, you can put lipstick on a pig but that don't make it a beauty contestant. If you need more information just ask.
See ya',
Craig

Don't send your kids to DISD. Like was said move to the suburbs. My school district is well thought of, and houses are affordable.

Like others have said, definitely stay outside the city limits.

Both my boys are enrolled with Plano ISD and we've been very satisfied all the way around:sweet

Well, I'm gonna echo everyone else. Go to the suburbs. Are there goos schools and teachers in DISD? Yes. But I stay as far away from DISD and the City of Dallas as possible. It is too much of a crap shoot. My wife teaches in Garland and loves it there. There are many good suburb districts to choose from. Good luck man.

The suburbs. We moved out of Dallas to get away from the private school expenses, because there was no way my boy was going to DISD.
Not only are the schools better, but home and vehicle insurance are cheaper as well. Once you get out of Dallas County, you start noticing the little things that are less expensive.

It was just reported today that 15% of DISD seniors won't be graduating because they did not pass their TAKS test:eek:

In most cases it should lead back to the teachers and school district why they didn't meet the TAKS:confused:
