I have made a deposit on what I believe to be a very nice '01. The body is straight as a pin and I have every reason to believe that the truck has been not babied, but well taken care of. I just found that there are concerns with the mech diode. There are many opinions on this. Is this going to be a concern or can it be a concern. I am giving the guy the upper end of the price range because the truck is clean and has a couple of thousand in add ons. I am not scared to walk away, but I would rather not. I found the codes that are typically associated with the problem and I will scan the truck. Input please.

how many miles are on the truck? and has any trans work been performed. Check any available records for trans service intervals.

You'll want to get an oasis report on the truck, some dealers will give it to you, others you might need to pay them to do a vehicle inspection and if requested it will be included. This will tell you if the TSB (see below) has been done at a dealer or not. And they should be able to give you a price for fixing the problem. use that as a negotiating tool with the current owner.

* TRANSMISSION - 4R100 - DELAYED OR NO 2ND GEAR - DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES P0781, P0755 AND/OR P0756 - VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4R100 TRANSMISSION WITH TRANSMISSION BUILD DATES BETWEEN 7/27/2000 AND 3/23/2001 ONLY

Publication Date: JUNE 26, 2001

FORD: 2001 E SERIES, EXCURSION, EXPEDITION, F-150, SUPER DUTY F SERIES, SUPER DUTY F-53 STRIPPED CHAS.
LINCOLN: 2001 NAVIGATOR
ISSUE:

Some 2001 vehicles equipped with 4R100 transmission, having a transmission build date between 7/27/2000 and 3/23/2001, may exhibit an intermittent, delayed or no second gear condition. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) that may be set with this concern are P0781 (1-2 shift error), P0755 (shift solenoid B malfunction) and P0756 (shift solenoid B performance). This may be caused by the Intermediate One Way Clutch (mechanical diode style) not operating properly.
ACTION:

Verify condition, follow normal diagnostics per the appropriate Workshop Manual. If diagnostics leads to the described condition, replace the Intermediate One Way Clutch (OWC) (mechanical diode style 7A089), Intermediate Brake Drum (7D044) and Intermediate Clutch internally splined friction plates (7B164). Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE

Verify above "ISSUE". Refer to Figure 1 for replacement components. Refer to the appropriate Workshop Manual for Transmission Disassembly and Assembly procedures. If contamination is present, a full disassembly and cleaning will be required. Follow all the normal service procedures as indicated in the appropriate Workshop Manual.

NOTE: MAKE SURE ALL MATING COMPONENTS LISTED ARE CHANGED. THE MATING COMPONENTS OF THE TWO DESIGN ONE WAY CLUTCHES (7A089) ARE NOT INTERCHANGEABLE. IF ALL THE COMPONENTS ARE NOT CHANGED, INTERNAL TRANSMISSION DAMAGE MAY RESULT.

NOTE: THE MECHANICAL DIODE DESIGN ONE WAY CLUTCH, DID NOT USE A #7 THRUST WASHER. THERE ARE NO MACHINED SLOTS IN THE INTERMEDIATE BRAKE DRUM FOR THE THRUST WASHER TABS. THE SPRAG DESIGN ONE WAY CLUTCH MUST BE USED WITH A #7 THRUST WASHER. THE INTERMEDIATE BRAKE DRUM USED WITH THE SPRAG OWC DESIGN HAS SLOTS MACHINED IN THE DRUM FOR THE #7 THRUST WASHER TABS.

That is teh one that cost me $3500 on my excursion, out of town in the snow. The dealership in the town said park it, we will be able to look at it in 2 weeks. We found an Aamco that was open on weekends, that took care of both the excursion, and a heavy feeling in our wallet.

I just had a full built tranny installed in my truck and David from DI Performance was the one that disasembled my old tranny to see what the problem was. Well the TC came apart and littered the inside basicly cut the fluid off. Anyway beside that I had a mech diode in the tranny and had 163,000 miles on that diode with out any problems. But that is like anything you could buy the same part next to me and one could last for ever and the other could break the next day. David said that he was amazed that the diode had lasted that long. Good luck with the purchase of the new truck.
