I plugged my block heater in for the very first time. There is a hissing sound so I unplugged it. Is that normal and does the hissing stop?

my 7.3 did it all the time for the first few mnutes
sounded like water starting to boil or expand
i think it was just that, the heater element getting hot like in a regular water heater when its been off for a few days, i figured it was the sound of just expanding water......-popcorn :dunno
then it would quiten down and warm up teh engine

my 6.0 is very quiet,
the only way i know its on is by feeling the radiator

Not that it helps a lot but I have a hose heater in my Mercedes and hissis for the first 15-20 seconds then quiets down and the car heats up just fine.

I agree I think it is just water rapidly heating and expanding. I think it will be just fine. Now that I think about it my last block heater made a bit of noise as well and it was in the block.

Well since there are others I guess it is normal, mine makes no noise at all though.

From my experience if it doesn't "hiss" or "sizzle"(DT466 & 7.3L) it's not working up to par so I replace it.

Must be getting abit cold out thata way to force you to hook up the block heater:sweet
