Block heater and hissing sound?

I plugged my block heater in for the very first time. There is a hissing sound so I unplugged it. Is that normal and does the hissing stop?

nope, not normal at all.

my 7.3 did it all the time for the first few mnutes
sounded like water starting to boil or expand
i think it was just that, the heater element getting hot like in a regular water heater when its been off for a few days, i figured it was the sound of just expanding water......-popcorn
then it would quiten down and warm up teh engine

my 6.0 is very quiet,
the only way i know its on is by feeling the radiator

Not that it helps a lot but I have a hose heater in my Mercedes and hissis for the first 15-20 seconds then quiets down and the car heats up just fine.

I agree I think it is just water rapidly heating and expanding. I think it will be just fine. Now that I think about it my last block heater made a bit of noise as well and it was in the block.

Well since there are others I guess it is normal, mine makes no noise at all though.

My old IDI heater made lots of noise, My PSD some, but not as much.

From my experience if it doesn't "hiss" or "sizzle"(DT466 & 7.3L) it's not working up to par so I replace it.

Must be getting abit cold out thata way to force you to hook up the block heater
