4x4 tries to pop into gear while driving

HELP!!! When driving down the road my truck will all of a sudden start making a horrible grinding noise from the 4x4 then I turn on the 4x4 switch it goes away for a little while only to start again after awhile. Does any have any Idea what this is and what is involved in fixing it? On limited funds and cant afford to pay to get it diagnosed and then pay to fix it.

is it making a fairly loud clicking noise? If so it is probably the locking hub(s) going bad on you. I had it happen to me with stock hubs. You can pull them to verify, but I would not recommend driving very far without them installed.

You may also have a vacuum leak to your hubs. Are they switch on the fly? If so your hoses may be cracked and almost letting you hubs engage. If so you may want to try this.
I have these on mine, when mine started doing the same type thing, someone suggested that I should try these. BY GOLLY THEY WERE RIGHT! Haven't had a problem since. If your old ESOF hoses are rotted, cracked or have never been changed, get the steel braided ones and don't worry about it again.......You can ask others but this is my story.

what year is the truck??

on mine, vacuum applies them; but I know on the F150's vacuum holds them DISengaged

Cap the hoses and the nipples on the spindles and install WARN manual locking hubs, problem solved.
