06E17 Recall. Input please!!!

Ok so I am def frustrated right now. I have an 03 6.0 F250 with 23k miles. I have had this recall for a while but never wanted to take it bc my truck ran absolutly flawless for 4+ years. I had to go do the recall because it would not let me register the truck without it. The truck had an RBP Turboback 4" exhaust with no cat and no muffler and a FIPK intake. Never a check engine light, never been in for anything but oil changes. I take it in for the recall. They said that it is 3 steps to the recalibration. With the stock FICM that was on the truck it would not get passed the 3rd step. They said that anytime that happens it's because the truck has been chipped but I have never chipped the truck at all. So they install a new FICM under warrenty and it gets through all 3 steps. Well when they take the truck out for a drive, it runs like crap and they say it surges/cuts out at about half throttle or so. They say it's because of the Intake/Exh. I tell them that you mean to tell me that I can never run an after market intake or exhaust on this truck? And they say that may be possible. Or that it may be since the truck has no CAT. I have talked to Freedom Diesel in Hemet CA and they say the dealership is full of ****. That if anything I could throw a CAT in it but that's MAYBE it. Has anyone else had any kind of experience with this? Any input would defin help. Thanks.

Ford is within their rights to have the cat put back on. This is Federal Law and Ford will insist that it be followed. Is this BS? YES. Put the cat back on and get the registration, then take it off. I keep telling people don't lose the cat. And that is why. Good Luck.

I already got the slip for the registration tags. The truck took the recall recalibration with no CAT. But now the truck doesn't run right. So what they are telling me is it MIGHT run right with the CAT ON. That's the position I thought I was in. I was like ok I'll throw a CAT in it and then take it off but it has already "passed" the recall without the CAT. I don't see how running the CAT on it would make it run perfectly fine again. But the truck has never had 1 single issue before. Thanks keep em coming please.

I have absoultley zero problems with the 06E17 flash. Matter of fact it runs beter than it did. Currently at 127k. I bet the dealer didn't flash it right. You could take it to another dealer and let them flash it. One thing you could try, although it probably won't help, would be to pull the batter cables off and turn on the lights for about 10 mins to pull the juice out of the system. Then reconnect and see if it cures itself. That's how I did the DIY re-learn proceedure for my turbo cleaning. It might help, it might not. Just something you could try if you wanted.

What is the 06E17 recall and what years does it effect?
I just got my 04 and am on a steep learning curve.

Turns out that the Mass Air Flow sensor went out while uploading the new module crap. Truck better run right just like it did for a long time, otherwise I'm gonna blow up a Ford Dealership! :rant

I got the recall put on my truck when i took it in for tranny problems, now the truck runs like a slug :(

For future reference, can you ask a dealer NOT to install a recall (like the flash)? I would assume they have some corporate law stating that any vehicle leaving for service must be up to date but figured i would ask anyway.

I had mine reflashed when this first came out. I am very happy with my results! Nothing out of sync with mine.

I had the recall performed in June, because like the OP I was required to to get my registration. Since then my truck has been in the dealership 4 (might be 5) times for lack of power, lack of fuel economy, lack of shifting performance, high EGT's, low boost, and high trans temps. Before the reflash at 90,000 the truck had run flawlessly, and never seen a dealer since it's front end alignment had been fixed. Our truck was still running it's original early 03 pilot injection calibration, and was a dream to drive. When towing our bronco into the sierras (6-7K trailer) the truck repeatedly averaged 13.9MPG towing at 70-75MPH (15-17MPG empty), and had throttle to spare, we could pull through 80 on uphills if we were passing someone. The EGT's never topped 1150, and the trans ran in the 180-200 range.

Since the recall, towing the same exact load, on the same exact hills, the truck is getting an average of 8.9MPG towing, and is now averaging 12-13 empty. When towing where it used to have power to spare at 70-75, it's now pedal to the floor, and dropping through 50 MPH. At the same time I'm having to lift out, because even trying o hold 50-55 the EGT's want to pass 1200, so we wind up almost as slow as our old 93 IDI turbo truck :( . At the same time, the trans temps are climbing into the 240 range which I don't like at all in regards to fluid life...

It's been back to the dealer multiple times since (4 or 5) and had about 6K miles put on it with no change. The dealer insists that it is in perfect running order, and every reading is right where it is supposed to be. They've called engineering for help with it, and they are out of ideas too. all they will tell my dealer is that a good number of trucks that came in with an early revission of the programming are exhibiting these symptoms. (Maybe it's because they've been gradually detuning it over the revisions, so it wasn't as noticeable?) At this point my dealer says if a new flash comes out with it in or out of warranty they'll flash it for free, and that otherwise we're going to have to add a mild programmer to get the performance back (easy to say, since we'll be out of warranty in a few miles).
