I just purchased an '04 F-250 with a 6.0...64k miles. It is only registering 13.4 mpg. I was expecting much better milage! Does this sound right, or what should I be looking at? Thanks...great forum!

Welcome to the Forum...............we are glad you found us.

only registering 13.4 mpg

That figure sounds low..............When you say registering what do you mean? Overhead console or figuring by hand?

Yes, the overhead console. I have yet to load my 2nd tank of fuel. The console read 7+/- when I bought it, but I could tell that the batteries had been serviced. It gradually increased to 13.4, but has leveled there.

Thanks for any help. I look forward to learning a lot from those of you who know Super Duties better than I...

welcome !

Id have to agree that seems a bit low...although you can go lower...
depends on what your draggin' behind or how far your foots in the
pedal on the right.

Ive seen as high as 20 (68mph, cruise set, interstate traveling)
ive seen as low as 12 (towing 6k lbs, interstate, running 82+ mph)

around town i typically see 13-15 (depending on how much
stop light to stop light fun im having)

dont trust that over head display...its been more often refered to
as the lie-o-meter than anything else...for the most part mines
w/in a 10th or 2 most of the time.

Make sure your tires are all aired up properly, don't let it idle too much, put in synthetic engine oil. Also, the vehicle doesn't need an extensive warm-up. A minute or 2 max. Welcome to the site. You have found the best one IMHO.

Hey Ken welcome aboard!:welcome3

If your truck is still in stock form I'd help out the mileage & performance by opening up the air intake & exhaust system:sweet

Welcome

Welcome Ken,

I have the same truck and get around 15 in town and 18 to 20 on the highway and the only thing I have done to change to a 4" pipe from the turbo back.

are you running any MODS ?

Consider changing and sampling the oil...if the injectors are
leaking youll get fuel in the oil.

Blackstone Laboratories - Diesel Engines

oil analysis (aka sampling) is never a bad idea...it can identify
minuscule amounts (measured in ppm) of undesirable wear metals,
coolant and fuel.

the detection of these items could alert you to premature bearing,
ring, cam etc wear, as well as head gasket failure and injection leakage.
