Well to start with let me say that I had to put it in the ditch cross ways of the road to keep it from sliding cross ways down the road and off Cove mountain. With all the snow and subsequent ice from the snow packed in the ruts, the two-fiddy slid across the county road when coming out of my driveway. I did get it backed into the ditch to stop the sideways slide but had to have a tug by a Toy truck to get me turned back around parallel to the roadway.

If i had a winch i could have winched myself out. What winch is anyone carrying on your ride or would recommend?

Warn 16.5 ti on mine, I would not touch anything less than a 12,000# for our trucks. For the price, I would look into the newer warn 12,000 powerplant. It is the winch with a compressor that will run actual tools. Compared to what I did for my winch and my on board air system, you will be money ahead.

My plan is for either the Warn 15K or 16.5K. General rule is the winch should be rated at least 1.5 times the vehicle's gross weight. For a 2004 with 8800 GVW the 12K Powerplant HD would be a good choice. Add a larger tank and you'll be set with winch and onboard air.

I like that idea.... they got that as a receiver style winch? I think I'm going to go with that. I just got my Ranch Hand bumper put on with 6 grade 5 bolts. I'm going to have to mark one more hole on each side to drill the other holes and move up to grade 8. Its got a front receiver on it.

With a reciever mount winch you have to buy the holder. However most of the holders they sale out there are only rated for 8k lbs. Used my 12k lb winch to pull a SAS ranger out of the lake. Twisted the hell out of the winch holder so now i'm building a beefy one.

Thats what I have, with a snatch block, ittl pull me and my 5th wheel outa most ... got my self stupid.... situations.

I'm thinking the receiver mount would be the way to go. You dont really know which end of the truck will need to be winched. I also like the idea of not modifying the look of the truck nor do i like the extended length the winch adds to the front. I can also use the receiver mount winch on my other trucks and tractors as needed.

I can add a 2" id square tube in the bed under the toolbox and lock the winch in the bed to carry.

Big Rooster, do you have any plans or ideas on how to build the winch holder?

Yes its gonna be a 2 inch tube welded to half inch plate. It'll be a beast to carry but i aint that small of a man. Will also be gusseted with half inch plate on the tube. I always just leave my winch on the front of the truck with a locking pin.

As far as the hooking it front and rear i've used mine on both ends of the truck. For wiring i ran double ought welding lead front and rear with those welding quick connects. Since i had the power run and a buggered up set of jumper cables i cut one end off and another quick connect. Voila jumper cables from either end of the truck.

What wall thickness are you gonna use on the 2" tube? I was thinking a piece of solid 2" bar stock would be much stronger but heavier. Weld the 1/2" plate on top and it would be virually unbendable. You may have to mount an auto crane on the truck to swap the winch from front to rear. LOL

Yes solid 2 inch solid stock that's what i have for my reciever hitches for trailering.
