My ebpv is wired either open or closed, but I have never looked into the benefit or detriment of it not working. The truck was modified before I got it. It gets around 12 to 14 mpg. I also thought it was a waste gate that was probably wired shut. Does anyone know what the benefit of it being wired is? Thanks A.R.

hopefully its wired to be open all the way..if not, your exhaust is restricted
and your running hot and wasting fuel....

most folks gut the EBP housing (remove the butterfly)
and disconnect the wiring to it....unless you live in like minnesnowta LOL!
edit: or Michigan :)

all it does is help the truck warm up faster in colder weather...

i have a 96 f350 crew cab dually 5 speed also stock. when i first bought the truck almost 4 years ago, i was able to get 18 to 19 mpg driving normal speed limits here in jersey. i have 4:56 gears for towing. eventually my milage has dropped to approximately 10 to 11 mpg. i was told by many other shops that the problem that i have was that there is a small tube from the front of the passenger side exhaust that gets clogged with carbon that sends a signal for the exhaust to open and close properly. in the winter time my truck first starts and sounds fine out of the exhaust but then repeatedly converts to a hissing sound and this will definitely lower my fuel milage. apporx. $37 in parts but about 8 hours labor. hence, it is still not fixed, but the truck still drives normal with a lower fuel milage.

I can't imagine it taking 8 hours to change the tube. It runs from the passenger exhaust manifold to the sensor mounted on the HPOP reservoir. If you don't want to spend the $37 for a new tube you can clean the old one out with a piece of wire chucked up in a drill. It will take an hour or two tops. The tube does run up behind the alternator bracket but no way will it take 8 hours.

that's what i thought too. 1 place said 8 and 2 others said 6 or more. i thought that was impossible and way too unaffordable.

Welcome!

Wow, 8-10 would hurt.

Check all the brakes and make sure they aren't dragging.

If it's 4wd make sure the transfer case and hubs are disengaging.

The stock fan has a temp activated clutch. If operating normally it mostly freewheels and costs under 1 mpg. If it is stuck engaged, I've heard as much as 4 mpg lost.

Compare your odometer against mile markeres to be sure it is accurate, or your calcs will be off.
