Ok this is not necessarily deisel related but I have a question. I've been watching a bit of TV lately (more than usual) and noticed a huge emphasis on the Payload of the new trucks comming out. Just saw a new Dodge commercial with a payload of 5000 LBS (on what truck.....not the one they were showing) and same with Toyota but with a different payload level.

I can tell you one thing. My dads half ton 2003 Tundra does not even handle 750 LBS let alone the full 1000. But that truck is sweet when it comes to ride and drive. Like a cadilac.

Am I confusing Payload with what you can tow. But either way if a new dodge can only tow 5000 LBS.....all I have to say is WEAK!!! so I know that can't be.

Can you guys help me out. Why the new big emphasis and is thier a change in technology that allows trucks to haul a lot more in the bed yet still ride nice?

I think it's mostly marketing hype. Something else to talk about... I know the camper cert for mine says 4263, and with some of the stuff my wife is looking at we'll be a little over loaded.

Haha. Yeah I know how that goes.

I know there is no way in gods great earth that even a 1ton rated truck could haul 5000 LBS so it was pretty interesting to hear that it could only pull 5000. I'm sure the engine could do more but the truck itstelf was only rated for that. Sooooo confusing when you see the new commercials for the F450 and its 10.5 payload.

Eat S$^&T gasoline trucks :)

Haha and just saw a F450 commercial....24.5K pounds. now if they are comparing apples to apples well in this case apples to orages I know there is a big difference between a 150 and a 450 but gosh darn that is a big difference.

Well I know my F-250 can have a total GCWR(gross combined weight rating) of 20K lbs. 10Klbs max trailer if you go by the book.

I believe the max GVWR (no trailer) is 12,500lbs. So with a guess of 7000lb truck I have a "payload" of 5500lbs.

Haha. I would like to Agree but we all know that is not going to happen.

The new Tunrdra comes with a supplemental (don't know what that means) tranny cooler. I assume that means one besides the standard built in radiator one. With that is a built in dash tranny temp gauge as well. I bet ford will jump on that band wagon next year...Or at least they should.

It is also comming with a 6 speed automatic overdrive an 4.3 rearend. The 5.7L has some pretty good numbers as well compared to my OBS truck. But then again it gets horrible mileage and I don't know about being able to do that realy heavy towing like our trucks.

But I'm a bit scared for Ford. All they had over the Japaneese Automakers was there trucks. I think they just lost the gasoline part to them with this new tundra. Nicer truck with more standard options and more power. And though they don't offer 0% financing they are very similarily priced. Why pay more for less. I think if they enter the diesel market in 2009 2010 Ford is going to have some big big problems especially if the rumors about their problems with International don't get cleared up. I hear they are comming out with a 3/4 and full ton in a couple years.

from what i understand rooster, GVWR does not include the payload you can haul in the bed.

my GVWR on my F350 is only 9900. combine that with the GVWR of my trailer, which is 14,000, i have a total GVWR of 23,900. i could be wrong tho.

Toyota is hyping the gasser because they don't have anything else. Plus the 5.7, I believe, is the biggest motor they have ever built. I really think CAT should get into the pickup truck market, but the big three have motors. I really hope toyota doesn't get hooked up to CAT.

Maybe it's just because I live in Michigan and only frequent a few surrounding states? But I don't see Ford losing the truck battle to any Japanese automaker. F-150 owners are a very dedicated breed, they keep buying the same truck every 3-4 years, occasionally losing a few owners, but I would guess more are lost to minivans and SUV's than Tundras. Your Tundra (majority) customer is going to be the 20 somethings that have never owned an american made vehicle. It's just natural for them to stay Japanese when they need or want a truck. If you spend your early driving years in a Honda or Toyota car? - you're naturally going to feel more comfortable in a similar truck. The F-150 customer is not shopping around for a couple more standard options, more power, etc... They're buying a feeling, just like the Tundra buyer. Very few people are analyzing options between different brands, they're more likley to buy the same brand different model. Maybe move from F150-250/350 or back in the other direction, rather than switch from Ford to Toyota for example.

Besides making a better truck and always improving on the current model, FMC should concentrate on keeping it's first and second time auto buyers loyal. That's how they will maintain supremacy in the truck market. Once they lose a customer to Camary and they buy their second import a few years later, they're as good as gone. One day they'll want/need a truck for towing/work & Ford lost that sale 2 Camrys ago.

As for the Super Duty market, I believe I read 7 of 10 SD's are being built with Diesel motors and once you get that kind of following it's not easy to break in and take market share. We are a freakishly loyal group of owners.

You mentioned "Nicer truck" What exactly do you mean by that???

Toyota: 5.7 381 hp @ 5600 rpm 401 lb.-ft. @ 3600 rpm
Ford: 5.4 300 @ 5,000 365 @ 3,750

You are slightly wrong. Max GVWR is the maximum amount of weight you can legally have on both axles when you're fully loaded and includes the pin weight of whatever trailer you're hooked to. The rating is conservative (hell, even I've been over MaxGVWR a handful of times) but Ford's lawyers probably want things that way.
