I have a 99 superduty w/ 54,000 miles, all stock except for a transmission cooler upgrade. Over the past few months(cold in ohio) when I start my truck, if I don't let it run for 20 minutes or so it loads up pumps out a bunch of white smoke from the exhaust, gradualy loses power & dies before I can get 1/10 of a mile from my house. It starts back up after 20 seconds of cranking, runs on one cylinder for awhile, cleans out & runs fine. I don't drive the thing for work. I've read the cps thread & don't think that is my problem. I don't mind letting it run a long time before I move it but sometimes it isn't practical. Any thoughts?:dunno

I've got a vibe that there's a fault somewhere in the glow plug system (GPR, plugs, under valve cover wiring harness) and that's what's preventing you from getting a good pre-heating...

gelling

I changed the fuel filter & put a fuel additive in the next tank with negative results. Today it did it & it was 40+ degrees outside.

I'll throw this out there and please dont be offended but........

Your tank does have diesel fuel in it right? Level is OK? And no water in fuel? Just asking dumb questions to be sure the bases are all covered here.

Do our trucks have a place to check pressure with a fuel press gauge (like a schrader valve?)

On the backside of the filter canister is a brass plug you can thread out and thread a gauge into.

I know the OBS has a schrader but didnt that get changed in the SD? There is a good write up on a schrader valve gauge set up for an underhood set up. I'll look and see if I can put a link. It wont do much for you for driving pressure unless you run a long hose and tape it to your windshield. I'll edit if I find it.

------
dieselpwrdredneck sent me this - assuming you have a schrader valve at all --

-I got the liquid filled gauge from Tractor Supply Company or other ag hardware
-The hose is just a grease gun hose from Tractor Supply
-The shrader valve should be 1/8" national pipe thread, which is already the same size as the grease gun hose i think.
-I got 1 male and 1 female 1/8" quick coupler-local hydraulics store
-one 1/8" 90* elbow male to male
-i needed an adapter to go from the grease gun hose to the gauge fitting (depends on which gauge you get)- Lowes or other hardware store

-Remove the schrader valve
-put the 90* elbow where the schrader was, pointing up, attatch one quick coupler to the 90* elbow
-assemble the gauge, adapter, hose and quick coupler.
i used thread tape on all the fittings
should be ready to go

I'll try not to take offense....Still trying... Anyway, yes it has proper fuel, proper level & has been treated w/ additive for water. I get no trouble lights that would indicate a retrievable code. When it warms to full operating temp, it runs fine. When it has been run & sits for a couple hours it starts & runs fine. I assumed it was related to the cold weather (gelling) but it's starting to warm up & it's still happening. I can live with it if I have too but i don't want to damage anything else by doing so.
