Just wondered what eveyones thoughts on waste oil burners were for heating a garage.

There is one for sale near my area and I want to use it but not sure if it is really worth it.

#1 They are messy and a pain to clean (This is a home made burner not one of the really nice ones from commercial dealers)

#2 I would have to do some drilling for a vent in the garage to get rid of the fumes.

#3 Safety....not so sure about this

The good

#1 Cheap free fuel and if it burns clean good for the enviroment

#2 Just a little different and it is much more quite than a propane heater if I purchased one of those

What are others thoughs with these things or experience. I'm not so sure how cold it gets here in NC but I'm assuming it is cold enough that I wouldn't want to be in my garage for hours in the night without some heat.

A friend and I were looking at some and it seemed they consumed the oil at a very high rate.

You may check local regulations, too... We have SCAPCA out here (Spokane County Air Pollution Control Authority) and they have extended an EPA regulation requiring waste burners to be inspected monthly or some such silliness to make sure they are burning properly and not polluting.

Anyway, the long story short is that private residences are not open to governmental inspection at a whim like businesses are, and as a result, they do not allow waste burners for private use (because they can't inspect them).

Pretty darn stupid, but the summation of all of this is that you cannot get a permit for the installation, and because the installation of a "permanently installed heating device" requires a permit on my home insurance policy, I could be denied my insurance claim if the GD thing burned my shop down without a permit from "teh gubbmint" man....

Thank you guys,

I'm especially worried about the cold now. With a new project on the way adn the cold temps here today I'm definetly getting something. I had no idea it got this cold down here. I just went on a run and my hands are numb and my rear lock on my door froze. Taken me about twice as long to type this e-mail as I can't move my hands.

As much as it would save on energy I think the pro's and cons just don't pan out for what I'm doing. I think I will be going with a propane heater. About 1/3 the price of that oil heater I was going to buy and about 1/4 the price if I was going to build one. And I don't have to clean it. Only problem is those things sound like a Jet taking off and it doesn't regulate heat. It is either on or off. Works good enough though. I will warm up my shop while I work in it and can turn it off after 10 minutes and work in silence.
