In my earlier post on my motor surging, after I get that figured out I want to then chip and exhaust my truck. I will have to probably do it in stages, that crazy thing they call money....:( I am going to mainly use my truck to pull my 5th wheel camper that weighs around 14k lbs. I know I need to get the gauges but I don't know were yet. so what should I do first exhaust or chip and what do you think I should go with.

Does exhaust help these trucks????

What about air intake system??????

Please bare with my questions This is my first diesel so I am learning, and what better way to do research is you guys that have already done things to your truck.

OH I have a 2003 f250 I have only driven it for 500 miles and I LOVE IT!!!!!!:thumbs

my plans for my 1st mods are

1: intake(just cause my friends selling me 1 cheap)
2: exhaust, I'm going to go with MBRP 4" turbo back, my buddy used one and really like's it, if I wasnt getting such a good deal on the intake I would do the exhaust first, then the intake, you want be moving air before adding power in my opinion, this is my 1st diesel as stated before so I'm no expert, just been doing alot of looking around.

Get the air in and get it out, Intake and Exhaust are the first mods you need to do. Gauges would be next on the list. These three can be done in any order that you prefer. Look to the sponsers of the site for some good deals, you might be able to get a package deal for the three. After you have those first three things and you still want more, there are several tuners to choose from. Tony Wildman is my preferance, DP, TS and DI are some other choises. Just remember its your truck, only do what YOU want to do, all we can do is recomend things based on our each individual findings.

I would agree that you need to get the air in and out before you add a chip. I also have a MBRP 4 inch turbo back and love it. i have a airaid intake that i also love, seals out the hot engine air and allows cold fresh air in.
I have a banks sytem in my truck and love it. you also want keep and eye on your EGT also so get gauges ASAP.

My next mod is injectors and maybe propane

Do your air mods first,(This will prep the motor for your upcoming power upgrades) then add a re-programmer. I went with the Edge products. They were the only unit that de-fuels at the shift point to save my expensive Torqshift tranny. You can adjust power levels on the fly and with the addition of the Attitude monitor you get 4 guages right on the display without adding guage pod on A pillar!:thumbs

Yes, the edge does show you what gear you are in along with a slew of other little goodies. (ex. oil temp, backdown, % throttle used, etc.) But, you can only see four at a time. Which is more than enough. I usually run boost, egt's, volts, and oil temp. I chose not to up grade my intake. I'm still using the stock air intake system. For the simple fact that they are finding that the airraid's and the k&n systems were dusting the compressor wheel, i.e. sandblasting the damn thing. When you have something that's turning that fast you want to keep all the F.O.D. away from that turbo as you can. And if you take it to dealer to get the turbo replaced after she puked on you, don't be suprised if they tell you that your warranty is void. The HP and ft/lbs. you get with those systems for these engines is minimal. I ran a k&n for a short period and switched back to stock because there wasn't much difference except for more intake noise. I started reading tech articles about the negative effects of such mods. I still run my edge and my exhaust, but I don't over do the edge. She doesn't go above setting three, and most of the time I just monitor the guages anyway.

Lot's of opinions here - which is the nice thing about this internet thingy :)

I'll throw mine in.... and understand I go against the conventional wisdon offered here :)
YRMV & BB ;)

Never had gauges on any of my 3 deezle Ex's
I relied on the experience of the many others that went before me...
They did the gauges, etc... and found out that IF you get more air flowing, you won't see as much a need for the gauges... UNTIL you tow heavy and LONG... meaning long runs up grades that need power...

Granted, if I were pulling lot's of weight up long grades for 30 minutes at a time I would want to KNOW when it got too hot.... thus gauge.... but between my ex and the trailers I pull, it's never been an issue.

Given all that,
I removed the limitation of the stock exhaust system
(specifically, & at least, the boat anchor muffler)

on my 03 I installed a turbo back exhaust system,
on the current 05 I followed CHPMustang's suggestion:
got a free flowing Walker BTM muffler...
concerned about changing the stock air filter (which is quite good) and losing warranty, I then did the jut the Zoodad intake mod...
for under $100 installed I have an interim solution until I want to put a full exhaust in...if I ever do !

and the SCT xCal2 tuner seems to like the freer flowing exhaust.

good luck to you and have fun !
properly tuned these things will STUN a lot of people !
