Has anyone tried the Vonage telephone service? I've seen lots of ads about it and the $24.99 monthly charge with unlimited long distance. My youngest son is signing up on it and wants us get it too. We have a wireless internet hookup, so the connection shouldn't be a problem.

My son has it also and it works great. I'm going to get it as soon as they have service available in our area code. We could get Vonage today if we wanted to get a phone number with a different area code. But it would be stupid if our next-door neighbors had to call long distance to talk to us.

One neat thing about Vonage, you can take it with you when traveling if you have access to hi-speed internet. Our son brought his Vonage modem with him when he came to visit recently. He just plugged it into our router and he was in business getting all his Nashville phone calls here in our house in Michigan.

How is the sound and signal quality? I dont want my house phone to be as crappy as a cell phone. I know it is different technology than cell service but that doesnt mean the sound is as good as regular lines.

Have they worked out the 911 bugs yet? Will it route to the correct 911 center w/ full 911 enhanced service (ie location info available)?

I use so little long distance that it does not make sense for me.

I don't know about the 911 bugs. Their website mentions a 911 service they offer that will feed your address to the 911 dispatcher. Otherwise, your address won't be listed, so you'll have to give the dispatcher the address. I'll find out about it. Every service should be able to feed the address to the 911 center, otherwise the response time will be delayed.

I just found it humorous that for 10 dollars, you get free long distance. How much do the charge for the "unfree" long distance?

I've had Vonage for about 8 months or so. I dont have any problems with it so far I know the 911 thing was a little screwy when I first got it but they have recently come out with enhanced 911. I dont know exactly how it works yet. I have been looking into another VOIP service called Sun Rocket which is only like $17 p/month with all the same services and features. I will prolly be changing over to Sun Rocket soon.

I just want everyone to be aware and look into the 911 issue. Might not be a problem IF you can speak. Also not sure how it would work w/ a home alarm sysem, just specualting that it could cause issues there. The FEDS were talking about requiring the E911 for all these VOIP's but I have not kept up, as it is impractical for me.
