Ok, I put on a replacment hose for the orange turbo inlet today and took this picture just to see how things look. Can anyone tell me what is up with that one fin? The round thing on the blade below appears to be a trademark or something. But what about that big oily spot that looks like some of the fin has been removed??? If you look at it full size you see it looks to be something more than just oil on the blade. it looks like part of the blade is gone.

I am not an expert, but I deal with aircraft turbo's, basiclly the same just bigger. I would like to look at a bigger picture to get a closer look. But what I see is a damaged blade, and some errosion on the other blades.
I think your getting junk in your intake before the turbo. Find the problem before you replace the wheel or you might be doing it again later.

I does look like a 99-03 blade, but I just put a rebuilt turbo on my '96 got it from International and started arguing with them that it had the wrong compressor wheel. They said it was the one, take it or leave it... It looks like when we change a turbo we loose the good wheel.

my orange boot had cracks where the clamps were so I supose that could have been a source of dirt getting in. I can't believe the tymar could be, in even the slightest bit, less efficient than the stock POS that the OBS came with. I could be wrong I suppose.

I did reach in yesterday to see if it moved at all and it was firm. I gave it a spin and it spun freely. God only knows how long it has been like this so I think I will leave it for now. I do wish I had the better wheel. That is what I get for going to the dealer that couldnt fix a wagon.

Bill - I had thought of the ccv previously but since I dont have an intercooler I figured it wasnt really necessary. If it is, I dont mind doing it. I would prefer, eventually, to get an exhaust bung for it.

interesting, can you wipe off the blade that is all oily and scraped looking.
if you passed lots of dirty air.. then all the blades would look shiny and worn down.
that one blade looks like something was resting on it while it was static....maybe in the box it was shipped in, like the lock nut or something.

it also looks like the grooves are perpendicular to the shaft plane of rotation. if something hit it while it was spinning it would leave marks more at an angle front to back to the shafts plane.

or maybe mr.tech used a pair of pliers to hold the blades still whilst he torqued the locknut and it crimped the protective coating and now its peeling off

either way a better closeup pic of siad blade would be helpful.

The Tymar is better than the stock OBS POS air box. Pretty much the same filter media just more of it with no POS air box to NOT SEAL. If you question the filtration, put a dab of grease inside the tubing, drive for a week and see if it has any dirt stuck to it.

Was the hose cracked all the way through?

Peter, Do you have a link or part number for the replaced boot? I thought the orange boot was obsolete and replaced by a black one. :SHRUG

yes but only around the portions where the hose clamps were. for that matter, most of the cracks would have been covered by the clamps.

Robert is right, if it was dirt it would not be one blade and I can see the lines perpendicular to the shaft too. I have a larger image but dont know where to post it so you can all see it in full size. Im not sure how much bigger it gets over what this site allows. Maybe a lot, dunno.

I have a birthday next month. I may just ask for the WW for that. ITP's site says year 99+. Is that just because that is when the wheel was changed or is there a fit issue?

--- when y'all click on the embedded image, are you then expanding it in your browser? IE will automatically resize to fit the window but you can enlarge to full size. When I do it the fin is huge.

No, I bought that black one I posted about a week or so ago. Noone knew anything about it so I just ordered it. $64 shipped. Today was the first day I have driven since I put it on and it seems fine. I squeezed on it when I got home to see how it looked/felt. Seems fine. Stinks though. Dont open the box in your kitchen.

Dennis at ITP doesn't sell the compressor wheels anymore, at least I can't find it on his site.

The WW is for the 99.5 SDs because the early models had that wheel from the factory. Wheels are the same except every other vane on the WW is shorter to change the map of the turbo.
