Did you check voltage on the batterys or did you load test them?

Mine just started with the long starts a few months ago, and it sounds very similar. I had 12V, but like you, the first start of the day took a while. Anyway, I finally load tested them and one was on the way to the great big battery tray in the sky.

Just make sure you remove the cables and do each one seperatly...buddy at work forgot to do so and thought his were good because together they load tested still OK, but seperate, you could easly see the weak one.

The batts. check out fine, alt. putting out 13.7 volts. Someone posted some info on testing for a draw. I cant find it. I'm going to pull the amps off line to night and see if thats the problem.
Does anybody know that relay is the fuel heater cant find my books on it.

13.7 is low. you may have tested when something was running ie:air, heat, glowplugs. yeah I posted in that draw test thread, I will try and find it and post that up. but 9/10 times a slow crank will be dying battries, not dead, just dying. If you bought you batteries with a warranty (most come with one) just bring them back and get new ones that will be prorated. another great free thing to do is to take all the connections for the starting and charging system apart and clean them with a brass brush and reconnect.

till then

I put new batterys in today, both the others batterys in the truck had built dates of 7/08 the ones I just put in have 6/09 built dates and have have 875 CCA each. There the same one I had before. So we will see what happens.

Dogman,

Have you checked you alternator. My truck was doing running the batteries down, and found it was a marginal alternator. After a few days I would have to recharge the batteries, but if I drove it daily it was ok. But if it was short trips or sit for a few days, the batteries would be dead. I had the charger on the battery, I happened to start the truck and look at the voltage and it was right at 12..... It would trickel charge enought if I DD the truck, but if I just ran to the store or pick up the kids from school, after a few days, I would goto leave and get the classic click, click..... Changed out the alternator, and all is good.....

yeah, 13.7 is low. If that is your reading after the truck is warmed up and all accessory's are off. If you still get that reading then the alternator will need to be replaced. you should be getting around 14.4.

If that doesn't work then all your left is the starter. This is the best way to be squashing these starting gremlins. Always, always start with the easier (sometimes free) to the hardest. you would be kicking yourself when you already replaced a $500 starter spending 3 hours doing so when all it was was a $120 in battery's and 30 min of work.

Well, I was having a brain fart the last few days and after it cleared. It hit me plug in the block heater and see what it does, so this morning I jumped in and hit the key and it started like it should. No slow start or lagging at all. So I'm going to check the glow plugs and relay. I have no check engine light so thinking relays. If the glow plug it self is not working would that not set the check engine light??
