Transmission Fluid Change

I recently got a 2000 F250, 4x4, CC, PSD with 160,000 miles. I have changed all the fluids and filter, except for the transmission!!!!!

I don't really know the trucks history and someone told me that alot of times when you change the trans. fluid after that many miles, that the trans. would/could go out. Any suggestions? Ok to change or not and if so what's the best fluids and filters......

i don't change the tranny filter, and as far as fluid synthetic is the way to go if you want to drop the coin

There is only one filter, and that is the internal tranny filter mounted in the pan. Its about a 200 micron filter and is nothing more than a sponge designed to stop LARGE particles. Not the really small stuff that causes the true damage. Install a "Magnefine" inline tranny filter just asfter the tranny coolers in the return line after you have done the flush.

As for transmissions failing after a fluid flush....I dont really buy it.

I just did it last night, and is pretty easy to do, even with one person.

Mobil 1 Synthetic is a very popular choice, but ANY Dexron-III/Mercon fluid will work.

DO NOT USE MERCON-V or any fluid that is dual rated, such as Mercon/Mercon-V. They will destroy your tranny.

FWIW, I had a 70's C6 Ford Tranny that had about 130k on it. Decided to change the fluid out and it ate up the tranny. I only had reverse...no forward gears...and this was within maybe an hour of driving it. Not sure if our tranny still has that propensity, but I, for one, have had it happen to me.

Yep, I got mine instock from NAPA. Probably not as economical as other options.
