Thats a very interesting idea, I wouldnt have thought of that... Are you going to put a flap of rubber behind the fairlead to keep splashing water out

On the SportJon they mount a roller type fairlead up under the bow and use cable. I am running a solid aluminum fairlead so I can use the AmSteel blue rope in my winch.

I might make a cap for the outside of it if it becomes a problem. Normally the water is far from the fairlead except during hard braking. A little bit splashing in is no big deal. Big ole bilge pump in the back can handle that just fine:D

If you look at this picture you will see where the bow is when underway. No water coming in at all.

Thats not me. That is a picture The Boat Shop took during testing that can now be found on Harbercraft's web site. The "fisherman" doesn't even have any line on his pole if you look real close. Just a "stagged" shot.

If you look here you can see a few more of there shots.

Some guys run UHMW plastic on the bottom. Jetcraft offers a reinforced XS with a 3/16 inch steel bottom and special 5086 ultra hard aluminum. I just run a regular old 3/16" aluminum bottom and try to avoid the big boulders. The 3/16 will stand up to a quite a bit of abuse from gravel bars and come out with just minor scratches. If you are heading for the big boulder patches it is good to get the reinforcement to avoid big dents. The UHMW is more for gravel than boulders, it gets ripped off in the sharp rocks. One XS that the Boat Shop used for testing has been beat like you cannot imagine and although the bottom looks like it has been run over by a train it does not leak a drop.
