I thought I had a tranny problem at steady part throttle under slight load (uphill)...but after installing a homemade Tymar and it getting worse and more pronounced...I'm thinking turbo surge. What can I do about it and what can I do to make sure this is/isn't the problem?
Thanks,
Jesse

I have been told that because it doesn't have a EBPV, it could have been replaced with a van turbo, I have also heard that it could be a stock turbo with a cold weather delete option. So, it could very well not be an early 99 turbo.

Does anyone have an pics of an early 99 turbo that I can compare my pic to? I have a pic that's small enough, but have failed to upload it 3 times now...
Thanks,
Jesse

What RPM were you at when the suspected surge took place? 1500-1800 is usual surge range. YES the early turbos can surge. Was the turbo making any unusual noises?

Here's a pic I found.

Rexa-a-Fords Turbos side by side

The late 99 turbo is on top, notice the larger compressor housing. If you have the cold weather delete option yours will look a little different. If you have a van turbo you won't have a waste gate actuator.

Attached is a pic of my new exhaust housing with van turbo adaptor instead of a EBPV housing.

Mine looks like the one on the bottom. It is at about 1500-1800 rpms and I didn't hear any noises. What can I do to make sure that surge is/isn't the problem and what can I do to fix the problem?

If it was turbo surge the whistle wouldn't have been the same. More like a shhh, shhh, shhh. Mine sounded kinda like a rattle snake when throttled hard at around 1700rpm. Only way to stop surge on an early 99 is a bigger turbo or drive out of that rpm range...either adjust speed or drop out of OD and get the RPMs up.

If you didn't hear a difference in the turbo whine you have other issues.

Unfortunately I don't have an aftermarket exhaust so it is hard to hear the whistle over the cackle. Time to lop off the kitty and see what she sounds like...

If, by bucking, you mean that the truck is lurching or shaking, then your problem is not turbo surge.

Turbo surge is not something you feel so much as it is something you HEAR. It starts out as a sort of warbling howl and then, as it gets more pronounced, becomes a metallic PST PST PST PST PST sound, which happens in very rapid succession. It will happen at 1,500 to 1,900 RPMS, at about 7 to 13 psi of boost, at 1/2 throttle or better. If it happens, a quick downshift will make it go away.

Physical bucking or shaking as you go down the road could be a bunch of things.

1.) Tranny is toast
2.) Fuel starvation caused by bad fuel pump or clogged fuel filter
3.) Some electrical/code fault causing a miss (ICP, PCM, etc)

Check your truck for codes. Change your fuel filter. Check your tranny fluid. From your description, your problem is not turbo-related....

Still have the problem with new tc, vb, fresh fluid/filter, fresh fuel filter and shimmed fpr, new u-joints, and no codes. Does it even when tranny fluid is cold in the morning. Does it mainly with the cruise control on around 70 and I begin to go up a hill, then as I almost crest the top of the hill. Maybe related, sometimes when it shift into OD, the rpm's will fall (like they should), then rise up a little bit (like they shouldn't...tranny programming or flare?), and then the tc locks up and immediately drops rpm's (as it should). I may be a little worried about that flareup. I notice it more in the morning, doesn't happen under WOT, and fluid does not smell burnt. Noticed a lot of shavings on the tranny magnet in the pan when I did the tranny work, but it also had 211k on it.
Thoughts?
