anyone want to guess the time difference between flat rate and actual time to put head gaskets on one of these heaps? (hint - measured in DAYS)

diesel or gass?if gasser, smallblock or bigblock?(really dont matter though).how hot did it get before it was shut down?may need to send heads to machine shop to be checked for warpage and cracked.should be done anyways though.without sending the heads out it should take less than 8 hours on a gasser.not sure on the diesels though but they shouldnt take much longer.i can do the gassers in about 5 hours without machine work.

I WISH it was a gas motor... I could've knocked that out in an afternoon... but NNNNNnnnnOoooooooooooo.... this thing is a 6.5 turbo...

broken a head bolt on the left side... tore a chunk out of the gasket big enough to pass the alignment dowel through. Snap-On PWZ pipe-wrench pliers to remove the head bolt (thankfully)... was not looking forward to pulling the block, beacuse then it would have been "...screw it, we're just putting in a crate motor..."

got it back together, wouldn't crank - starter took a crap...

put a starter on it... found a fuel leak from an injector line...

tore the intake off it again, fixed the fuel leak... then didn't have any clutch pedal...

put a clutch slave on it... drove it down the road... fuel filter is clogged with water and crap... put a fuel filter on it...

now it sets a code for the optical sensor in the injection pump... I'm tempted to do the "Army mod" to the injector pump...

what did I get paid for this job? not one red cent...
bought the parts out of my own pocket...

trading the job for a hitch wagon for the horses...

I'm figuring about $2,800. for a hitch wagon I could have picked up on Tack Trader for about $2,000...

ok just checking.id hate to see you have to do it all over again in a few days.a friend of mine that thought it was a great mechanic did headgaskets on a 6.5.he was told to send the heads out.he didnt, and charged the customer for it as well  .well 2 weeks later its back for the heads again.again didnt send them out.and a weeks later he was doing it again.he finaly sent the heads out and both were cracked around every prechamber.what an idiot.i wont do head gaskets with out sending the heads out to be checked.its cheap insurance that aint nothing wrong with them.ive never had a head gasket job come back.they all were junked with great running engines but rotted out bodies :D :thumbs

yeah... I was forewarned about this by a friends' brother, who works for Ryder, and has about 100 of them to keep on the road...

They don't even bother checking them. They pull them, put recons on the motor and send the old ones in for core. He said if they send in two "good" heads, it was worth the cost of the new ones to not have the job go south.

I haven't seen a good 6.5, but have been told that you can mod the waste gate in some way and it will be less of a dog. Still weak engines.

Wow, sounds like you would have been better off finding a quiet spot and pounding your balls flat with a hammer.
