Have you ever looked under a big truck? Rockwell's and Eaton's drop in the front and have square tubes. A F450 is a heavy duty truck with a heavy duty axle. Toyota -

ok so how come f350's dont have this SAME style drop in diff...and
then 'splain why a light weight toyota has it and 350s dont...

how long has the 450 been a square axle'd tube'd...front drop in ???

Some Arab sheik is spending those windfall oil profits on a nice truck. Maybe he should have bought seven, one for each day of the week.

At least some of that oil money is keeping the guys at KTP gainfully employed for a bit longer. Things being what they are I imagine there will be some guys and gals drawing unemployment in Louisville in the not too distant future. :dunno

The F450 is rated for more weight than the F350 thus it uses a different axle housing. If you had a F450 housing under a F350 it would be called a F450. Axles are manufactured differently for different weight ratings.

The Toyota's use this style just like the old Ford 9" uses this style but it is not a weight rating thing in there case. I have broke both Ford 9" housings as well as Toyota housings from overloading.

i get why the 450 has square tubes...what i was asking was

1) how long has the 450 had square axle tubes
2) why the 350 doesnt use a drop in (from the front) ring & pinion
config like the 450 and toyotas

the dropin ring and pinion doesnt make the axle stronger...the drop in
makes it easier to service and set up.

since when was the 450 classified as a HEAVY duty truck....
thats pretty impressive they skipped right from teh light duty (350)
all the way to the HEAVY DUTY (450)

and to think all this time i thought the 650 was classified as a MEDIUM duty
