A little trick I found out, when I replaced my tensioner assy., is that when you pull on the ratchet to release the tension...there is a little spring-loaded clip on the bottom side of the assembly. When you get the ratchet pulled back, flip the clip up (hold it there) and ease the ratchet back in. The clip holds the tension off so that way you don't have to throw the belt off a pulley and you can work with both hands.
