Ok, I started my truck this morning in 50 degree weather and about 15-20 seconds later she whistled at me. After it started and the turbo started hissing I heard a quick and loud whistle. I shut it down and restarted but it didn't happen again until it had set for about 5 minutes. What is this? Has anyone else experienced this? Now everything runs fine but this has me concerned. Could it be the thing that kicks the rpm up when it is cold? Could the temp have confused it?

Thanks
Scott

You have a MBRP exhaust without the cat, and this is the first time you have heard it whistle at idle????? Boy you should hear mine.

I don't have a muffler either and no it whistles all the time. This was just a quick lound whistle like a bottle rocket only not as long. I have heard it do it a couple of times before but I didn't pay it to much attention. I actually repeated it 3 times this morning and it was always after it had been turned off for at least 5 minutes and it didn't matter if it hadn't been driven all night or if it had been driven for at least 20 minutes.

Thanks

Well, that was wierd. Was just responding to you and my notebook just shut completely off.?????

Maybe your vanes are sticking, I've heard of others having that problem. Have you noticed what the rpms are doing, (up and down, irratic??) Keep an ear on it, if it continues or gets worse, take it in, its under warranty I guess.

VGT sensor or EBP sensor going south???

I've had two EBP sensors, but those usually will make the turbo spool up then drop off when they go bad.

MY VGT sensor just made the truck run like crap. Idled horrible and would belch black smoke periodically.

When I had my '06 F250 I heard this at all cold start-ups. Sounded like a jet landing, or taking off. Drove the wife absolutely crazy. At the time, no cat and straight piped. Haven't gotten to the exhaust mod on the Excursion just yet. Exhaust sounds deader than a door nail.

Okay, just to clarify what the whistle sounds like. Light a bottle rocket and as soon as it takes off it imediately quits. The sound is a loud pop whistle and then it goes back to its normal whistleing sound. This isn't something it normally does just lately. I had a bad EBP sensor but it never made this sound before I had it changed. It does sound like something is sticking and as soon as the high pitch whistle starts it opens up. The problem is, I don't know what is sticking.

Thanks

Don't know if this helps or not, but I was at a ski trip this weekend at SnowShow WV... got cold last night. about 6 above. We couldn't even stand it in the hot tub! Anyway, the truck hadn't been started since Friday, so it was definately cold. Glow plugs took forever, but when I hit the key, it cranked over and gave me a real quick buzz to whistle almost like the turbo fart... Oddly enough, I could easier explain the sound as a GM diesel train locomotive starting up. Anyway, it did the typical rattle bang rough idle for a moment or two then about a minute later it goes into it's high idle routine. She belched out black smoke for about 2 minutes before settling down.

I guess the most logical thing I could come up with is the engine program is giving a do or die approach to cold starting, hit it with everything you got for a few revolutions, then take a more normal approach. It sounded to me like the turbo wasn't turning (duh, it's off) and it got hit with a boat load of exhaust gas moving at high speed, so it came up to speed very abruptly, hence the strange sound...

well you know
since the latest reflash, if old girl is started up COLD (no plugg in) she catches just as the last of the engine turn overs... then kinda rattles up to a weird very LOW idle, not jumpy, just very low, almost as if its just barley fast enough to remain running, reminds me of the old IDI with the mechanical injectors, it seems to be thinking about how to run, and smokes like HECK, which was a thing the reflash was supposed to stop.... she never smoked before the reflash....
blue unburnt smoke. then if you tap the throttle its dead till about 1/2 throttle then it will lurch like a big rig pulling out in low gear, cab twists over from the torque and she rolls slowly.
i backed right into my cargo trailer becuase i wasnt ready for it to play dead till 1/2 throttle. BUMP scrape went the trailer coupler:eek:

Well truth be told, I'd rather have it run at 500 RPM for the first minute or two anyway, as when it's that cold oil doesn't like to move well. Once it warms up or is already at a more normal temperature, I dont cringe as much when an engine starts and jumps to 2 grand on the tack, know what I mean?
