Can anyone explain how to get the Serpentine Belt over the alternator pulley? I've been pulling and cranking so hard that my arms hurt from trying to get belt up far enough to slip over the pulley on the alternator. The only other way I've been able to get it back on was to tilt the alternator down, put the belt over the pulley and then tilt the alternator back up to put the bolts in. Problem with that is that the tension is so tight it's hard to manuever the alternator to line the holes up and with the tension, it's possible to crossthread the threads where the bolts go in. Any ideas is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

6.0L engine

Rotate the drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the drive belt.

Installation is reverse of removal.

GBBB, this is from the DVD. It might help...

Bruce I have to say well done on the photos:sweet

And yes the tensioner does take a 1/2" drive breaker bar.

What DVD is this from? Is it possible to purchase one, or is this a ford dealership searvice tool only?

I sure do appreciate the help, hopefully it won't take another 3 days to put this back together :cussing:

Here's the link to purchase the DVD on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2003...038991890QQcategoryZ34221QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

You can scroll through his other items to find the DVD specific to your truck. I've got the 2003 edition which covers Super Duties and Excursions, and all four motors (5.4, 6.8, 6.0, and 7.3). He sells them for $20 plus $3 shipping.

A word of caution, though, the DVD is copied. I don't know if it's illegal or not because it's an old version of the program. Basically, you've got to reset the date in your computer for the DVD to work (when I'm done I just reset back to correct date). It's kind of a pain in the butt, but it's the only thing I've seen available that covers the 6.0. I've checked Haynes, etc, but haven't found anything for it.

Glad I could help.

Well after spending 30 minutes trying to get the breaker bar in a spot I could actually get enough leverage on to turn it, and no I couldn't, my brother in-law came over and we were able to pull up enough on the belt to get it back on the alternator and then bolted it down. You would almost have to have the fan off just to get it to a spot where you could actually pull up on it enough to twist it. There's barely enough room to stick the breaker bar in the slot. Barely had enough room to stick my hand down there to grab the belt. Sure is nice to know that car manufactures are making it harder and harder to work on your own vehicle anymore. I think I'll go back to my 79 Ford Bronco where I had enough room to almost stand in the engine compartment to work on it, I sure do miss that thing.

So now I know that I'll be taking it to the dealership to have the belt replaced. What a PITA. My Durango takes me all but 10 minutes change the belt.

Thanks for the info, I'm sure I'll be able to use it down the road.
