Where abouts do you live? My family and I live in Dallas as well, and I am curious how far away you are.

Hey Bart,
We live on the edge of Lake highlands. Northwest Highway and Plano rd. is the major intersection by us. It is normally a quiet neighborhood, once in a blue moon the police are in our area because of a questionable apartment complex just down the road, but otherwise it is usually uneventful.

Yeah, that's a seemingly quiet place. We are in far north Dallas on the Richardson border. My battles have been with overnight vandalism. The truck has been hit with two eggs (seperate occasions) a cupcake and a string of fire crackers was deployed on my hood. We've been lucky and haven't had any crazy knocking on our front door, and it appears that he probably won't walk all the way up here to come see us. I salute your handling of the situation.

geez Craig you are right next to where my wife and I used to live. We were on Brookhurst just 1 block South of Hexter elem. Left there almost 7 years ago. We loved that neighborhood but you are right, there are several questionable apartments closeby.

Developers have bought a lot of the apartments and have torn them down or are in the process of tearing them down and building 300K homes. Doesn't help that some vacant homes over here were leased by FEMA for those affected by Katrina. For a while we had a house where people were coming and going at all hours, parking in the middle of the street and blocking it off, loud music, drunk in the front yard, blah, blah, blah.
We as a neighborhood got together and started calling the police for every little thing going on at the houses the police were good and even advised us to continue to call 911 as they would put pressure on the people leaving the house. Appearently they were true to their word as the individuals living there have moved on.
What really chapped us was that when we heard that Katrina refugees were moving in, the block collected furniture and other necessities for them and this is how we were repaid.
Hard to stay off of the soapbox today.

A shotgun is a good weapon for home defence, but you really need a short barrel. An old 10 guage side by side and shortened to 30' total length makes a nice choice. Buck in one barrel, bird in the other. Glad to hear you and your family are safe.

i have a question. you see alot of non-lethal weapons being used by law enforcement of all kinds.

is there such a thing for the home owner, who doesn't want a real gun?

for example, some law enf. use the bean bag gun, that really stunes a person.

something along that line is what i am asking about.

thanks.

Stephen,

While I'm sure there are some options, most that LE uses are designed with the idea that there is more than one officer around. As a home owner, you don't have much recourse if you miss with the bean bag gun and the "criminal" is heading towards you. The same goes for tasers. You have to be pretty close to deploy them. Also, consider that LE goes through a lot of training in using them.
Anything that puts us homeowners close to the "criminal" to utilize them makes me a little nervous.
I googled non-lethal home defense and it seems that pepper spray is highly recommended. Might be an option.:dunno

Be prepared.

Tasers, mace, pepper spray, all come in second in a gun fight. Bad guys carry guns most of the time. Bad guys who are on meth, coke, and other drugs are sometimes difficult to overpower with chemicals. 12 ga. #4 shot works best.
No normal person wants to kill another person, but if it comes down to the low life pond scum bad guy, or your wife and child, which do you choose?
Most of us will never have to make this decision, but everyone should be mentally prepared to use what ever is needed to protect your loved ones.
Mossberg makes a 12 Ga. pump shotgun that comes with both long and short barrels that are removable, that goes for around $225 at Big 5 Sports stores. Like an earlier post stated, sometimes just jacking a shell into the chamber will scare a would be attacker away. In my law enforcement days, I have seen people willing to rush a person who is holding a .22 cal. hand gun, but I have never met a person willing to rush a person holding a 12 ga. shotgun.
God willing, you will never need to use it.
