With the proper scan tool you can do an injector buzz test to insure the injector solenoids are firing and you can also do a CCT test.

I'm trying to get someone to take a quick look at it, but he mainly deals with cummings so i doubt he'll be able to run these tests. I see that AutoEnginuity will run these tests. I wonder if my autotap will...

How many miles on the engine?

140k

The reason I asked about the oil is the PSD is finicky about oil, the injectors are fired by high pressure oil and with old/dirty/wrong grade it is common to get a rough idle.

I did not know this, could the wrong oil also cause it to be burned in the cylinder?

140K is relatively low miles for a PSD if it was maintained properly, the blueish smoke on startup may not be anything to worry about. Wrong grade oil probably wouldnt contribute to the blue haze as much as a cold engine will, the wrong grade of oil just wouldnt be able stand the harsh conditions that a diesel will subject it to. Foaming can occur causing runability issues.

a diesel is alot more complicated that a gasser. I doubt it has anything with the block or cylinders. It can any one of many many things on these 7.3 motors. a autoentegrity is your direct answer. but my vote is on something simple, at the worst a set of injectors or injector o rings.;tu

The idle doesn't smooth out at all, no matter how long its on. You still think it could be the glow plugs?

Looks more to me now that the smoke is probably oil not water/coolant. Can a compression test be done on a diesel just like its done on a gas motor? As you can tell i'm a newb when it comes to diesels.

First off, welcome to SDD.com. Next, more than likely, no, if it doesn't smooth out at when it's warm it aint glow plugs. Yes, compression tests can be done on diesels. If you do it yourself, be sure you have a good test set. Also make sure you reasearch what the compression p.s.i. should be per cylinder. Good luck;tu

Is that picture taken at idle from a cold start? You say that smoke never clears up at all?

I'm going to suggest the possibility of a bad injector/o-ring. It's obvious there is too much of something, either oil or fuel, causing the smoke. If you are going to do a compression test, as long as you have the valve covers pulled, might as pull the injectors and inspect them all real good (o-rings, copper gaskets and tip). Wouldn't hurt to get them bench tested also unless you find something glaringly obvious with the o-rings.

BTW, what size trailer ball does that cloud of smoke take??
