Removal Of Cab

Does anyone have the process on what it takes to remove the cab? I need to do head gaskets asap and I am trying to get all my ducks in a row.

I can get you the cab removal procedures as I work for a body shop, but I am not certain that you want to in order to do the head gaskets. I am new to diesel ownership but I have replaced frames on these many times, is the cab removal absolutely necessary? Let me know or shoot me an email and I will get the those p-pages over to you....Dune

On the 6.0's to properly do the headgaskets, and/or headstuds, you have to remove the cab, or pull the engine. You can't get to some of the back headbolts if you don't. The general consensus is that it is faster and easier to pull the cab, then the engine. My local Ford dealer pulled my cab in just a couple of hours, when they replaced my headgaskets.

I have been to a few shops getting parts, and inevitably there's a cab off a diesel. The Excursion is even more interesting. It could probably be done with a few forklifts or a block and tackle type arrangement although it would be a little primitive. A pair of good mechanics in a well equipped shop can do it in several hours only after they have done a number of them for experience. At least that's what my tech has told me.

I have seen photo's of HG removel done inframe.

The feller had to remove all the A/C components and others parts as well to get to the rear bolts.

John, I have also seen some pics of an Excursion, they lifted the whole body with the side picker hydraulics.

It was pretty cool.

Thanks for the input guys but I am going to install head studs while I have the heads off. From what I have gathered is that the head gaskets can be changed without removing the cab as long as you use the stock bolts. The studs is what requires the removal of the cab. Now I may be wrong and if there is an easier way then please fill me in.

Dune, I would still like to have a copy if it isn't to much trouble. Another idea would be to make the directions a sticky on the forum, could this be done Moderators?

With bolts, yes. But I believe the O.P. said he wants to use studs. No room to get the heads over the studs from what I've seen.

I just had the head gaskets replaced, a new head and turbo and the ARP studs installed on my '04 6.0 at the dealer. The tech pulled the engine with out lifting the cab and did the work with the engine out. I asked him about lifting the cab and he said he could remove the cab in about 2 hours or pull the engine in the same 2 hours and usually just pulls the engine.

Yep, they pulled the engine when they did mine. I really didn't want the cab lifted off.

Too many wires and air hoses for the chicken lights and train horns.
