Ive got a 99 ford f-450 and the other day i noticed that the rear end was a little wet and that there was a little puddle under it. It is leaking from the front seal on the rear end where the shaft that connect to the driveshaft goes into the rear end. How hard would it be to change that seal. And also a friend of mine said that he would not change just keep on adding fluid because if i do not do it correct i could mess up the pinion angle or something like that. And if that happend it would cause more damage to my rear end. Thanks for the help and advice ahead of time.

It won't mess up the pinion angle, but it could mess up the pinion/ring gear set up. Personally, I don't like stuff dripping from my vehicles so I would get it fixed. Sooner or later, you'll forget to check and fill and that will cost a lot more money.

Edit: What's leaking is called the pinion seal.

Mine also went bad was going to replace it at home. I went and bought a 1 1/4" drive socket set because the pinnion nut is so big. Unless you have an air gun you wont get it to budge. Took it into the dealer where my brother works and had them install the new seal due to the above mentioned. Also had them check the backlash on the gear set and re install with royal purple synthethic fluid.
