Hi,

Had my speed sensor replaced today and when my mechanic took it out it had quite a bit of metal shavings on it. He said its most likely a bearing going and will need to be rebuilt soon. How long do you think I will get out of it? He asked if it started making noise, and I said it hasen't yet. Has anyone had a rear dif go bad on them?

Thanks
Jeff

The magnet was pretty much covered, one the size of a 1/4inch long pencil lead. There was also a plug on the side of the dif that had some shavings on it. It wasn't like a huge clump of shavings, but it had a layer on it.

it may or may not be a big deal...

thing to do would be pull the plug again in about a month or so and see what's covering it then...

I changed both diff's fluids yesterday, and there was some fuzz on mine as well, truck has 106k on it...

Mine happens to have 107km on it, im sure you ment miles though. I will do that and see whats on it, will the plug be sufficient or do I need to pull the sensor?

I'd just pull the plug... it's got a fuzzy-catcher in the end of it..

have them check the backlash first, it could be the carrier bearings and not the gear set. If the gear set looks good you may only need to replace the carrier bearings and reset the back lash. Therfore the pinion bearing and depth should be ok.

gear setups require skill make sure your guy knows what he is doing. especially if they replace the gear set which requires correct pinion depth

i had two rears go on my 96 f150...1st time it was
the pinion beaing...3rd party warranty company wouldnt
replace the other bearings (or do the job "right")....6 months
later it was toast again....and i ran that thing til you couldnt
carry on a conversation in the truck w/out YELLING.

the 3rd party warranty company did the job the 2nd time...the
RIGHT way ;)

Id pull the cover on that thing and change the fluid...cant hurt
to help extend the life....if theres any more metal that didnt
get picked up by the magnet, draining/replacing the fluid will
help get some more out of it.

itll cost you about 35 bucks for royal purple rear gear lube and
5 bucks for some rtv-form-a-gasket.

if i were loosing a rear gear set id be looking forward to installing
some more mpg friendly gears....maybe 3.55 or so.

heres an interesting chart i hadnt seen before.
