The problem I'm having is that when the truck gets good and hot I loose( slow to react )power steering when I hit the brakes but it comes back when i release the brakes and it is only when the the fluid is hot.

have you noticed any leaks at all? if you have a leak, you could be losing pressure.

I wonder about these "weak" pumps simply being garbage caught in the valving... it happens..

It is hard to steer at idle or stop only when it is hot. I don't know how old the fluid is. I bought it a year ago, I've never changed it or added to it. But I do check it often, and from what I know from the previous owner the pump is original, with 139000 miles on it. Should I change the fluid first or just change the pump, and what should I use for fluid ? atf ? All help is appreciated as always thank you guys.

you can try a flush of the system first thats the cheaper way but it sounds like the pumps about to go.

you cooler could be clogged and causing the fluid to boil. try flushing the system but make sure you go in reverse of the system flow to try and clear it out or have a radiator shop do it.

if you got the money i would get a new pump and flush the cooler and lines. in reverse to see if anything is blocking up the cooler
