Overheating

The truck was running fine, pulling well and I got a chime and message that said check gauges. I looked at the gauges and the engine temp was approaching the red line. I backed out of it and the engine cooled. This happened three other times without the chime and message. I caught it before it got that hot. I was driving as I always have when pulling the camper. I was overdue for an oil change and was pulling into a pretty heavy head wind, but I don't think that would be the reason for the overheating. I have pulled my camper through the mountains in Tennessee , North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia without an issue. I am supposed to take my truck to the dealer this week with my rig atached and they are going to ride along and monitor the engine.

D.P.- What did your dealer come up with? How goes it?

Went to the Dealer ??????????????????

I took the truck in to the dealer with my camper in tow. They hooked up a computer to it and we went for a ride. The truck did exactly as I described before and the Diesel Mech is dumbfounded. The temp would start running up at about 190-200 deg (Normal for fan to kick in) and would run up to about 230-235 degrees then cool back down. They still have my truck with camper attached and are trying to figure it out. It only does this under a load. ????????????????????????????????????????

Not sure how it could get that hot w/out puking out some coolant.

whats the OIL temp ?

tell the tech to compare the EOT & ECT...i forgot what the temp
differential should be (iirc not more than 20* diff at the most).

have they pressure tested the cooling system ???
have they tested the coolant for exhaust/combustion gasses ???

They pressure tested the coolant system and there is no overflow. The Mech is wondering if the truck is actually overheating or if it just thinks it is. He was going to call Ford Engineering today and check on Tech Bulletins. Stay tuned for info as I get it.

there were some problems w/ bad TEMP gauges or sending
units as i recall...iirc they were specific to 2005 model year.

It has us all baffled. The truck has always and is running and pulling fine. Just have this temp issue all of sudden at 98k miles. I hope to hear from or call the shop tomorrow and see if they found out anything from FORD.

Publication Date: January 7, 2005
FORD: 2005 F-Super Duty

ISSUE:
Some 2005 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with a 6.0L diesel engine and built prior to 12/10/2004 may exhibit the engine temperature gauge reading at the top of the normal band (green) or the bottom of hot band (red), while the engine's temperature is actually normal.

ACTION:
If no engine overheat condition is present, replace the instrument cluster. If diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0217 (engine coolant over temperature condition) is present (stabilized ECT greater than 240° F (116° C)), and/or coolant is expelling out of the degas bottle, do not perform this TSB. Continue with normal diagnostics for engine overheat condition.
