U.S.S. Alabama in Mobile AL. A shame she was only active for 7 years.

Never was on the U.S. S. Alabama, but have been on the U.S. S. New Jersey BB 62 and that is one big Mother. I saw the NJ firing her guns in Vietnam one Sunday after noon. Got to see some trees go 30 feet into the air when the shells would hit.

The next time I go home to the Philly area (X-mas most likely), my Dad and I are going to visit the New Jersey since it's tied up across the river from Philly as a museum now. :thumbs

I would have loved to, but they don't let you go up there. And my gosh was it HOT below deck!!!!!!! They had a model display of the different classes of battleships and the Iowa class (Iowa, NJ, MO,WS) are significantly larger than the South Dakota Class (i.e. U.S.S. 'Bama).

I think we should still have one or two on active duty just because they are impressive to see and they can throw conventional lead like no other IMHO.

Me too ! We usta have to clear the Trajectory Area when She'd send in a salvo..... We could see and watch the projectals go by.... 'bout the size of a 55 gallon drum. When they'd impact.. the ground would shake for miles around.

Knocked a Beer of the hood of my Grader from 'bout a mile away....

Whooops.. go'n down "memory lane" again ;) :D

You've earned it, Joe, no whoops needed there. Us young bucks that have lived sheltered, safe lives thanks to you and guys like you will never tire of hearing you tell your stories. Maybe a little jealous? Don't know...

One question i DO have is this...

In the movie "Band of Brothers" I recall the landing bombardment on D-day literally shaking the ground as the shells flew overhead. Not from the explosions, but from the vibrations and noise just specifically from the big gun shells flying overhead. Is that really what it is like??? If so, all I've got to say is WOW....

Thanks Hoss.

Yes.. Just about any shell makes some sort of sound. The bigger the louder, and some-what different. The shells from the "Jersey" made a loud WHOOOSH/ROARING sound with a RUMBLE.... But they alwayz seemed to me to be Quieter than normal artilery.... for as big as they were. When they got closer to the ground, they had some sort of air wave that would rattle and shake everything.
