Hi all. Well I didn't really want my first post to be about a problem, but you know how it goes. I have been having an oil smell coming into the cab of my '07 250 6.0 through the vents for about a month. It only happens if I've been driving and come to a stop, like a red light. It doesn't matter if I am pulling anything or just puttin' around, I still get the smell after I stop. Then after about a minute or so it goes away until the next time I stop. There is no smell if I am moving or if I put the a/c on recirculation.

I have checked all of the obvious things, being that I just had the oil changed I figured someone didn't seat the filler cap all the way or something like that, but no, it's all tight and closed up.

I took it to the dealer and they found nothing, but did tell me that they are going to need to replace my coolant overflow tank and cap because of a pressure build up. No idea about that. Just wondering if anyone has had the same issue. Thanks.

does your truck have the CCV mod?

or otherwise, I'd be looking for a small/slight oil leak..

Nope, no CCV mod. I was under the impression that was only for the 7.3. That definitely sounds like the right kind of problem though. Thanks.

possible valve cover leak....mine did the same and ended up replacing the right valve cover and gasket....

That's something else I was thinking. It's going to the dealer in the AM, just looking for an idea to help them out. Thanks.

It only takes a couple of drops of oil when it hits the hot metal to smell up the compartment ,that's for sure. Hopefully the dealer finds and corrects for you. But I would be just as concerned as to the "pressure build up" you refered to. You should find out what caused this. Was it a cap that didn't vent at 16p.s.i.,or exhaust gas getting into cooling system,or some other blockage? Do you have the puking coolant isssue? Maybe the smell is hot puking coolant? You'd have evidence of this around the Degass bottle, cap, and hood liner above the cap.White stain and sometime crusty deposits.

Well got it back from the dealer. Yes I had the puking coolant problem, but to the best of my memory, I had the smell before the coolant issue. I could be wrong. They told me they did a TSB for the coolant system which involved running some tests...all normal. Then they looked for an oil leak all day they said, and once again....all normal. What they did was update the PCM and do another software update that they said changed the temp in which the fan turned on in order to prevent pressure build up.

Not really sure what to think. I still have the smell coming from the vents, but I suppose that it could be some spilled oil from a few weeks ago. They replaced nothing in the coolant system so I am hoping the reprogram fixes that problem. I'm going to continue to look for the oil/vapor leak and hopefully fix that myself. If anyone has any other ideas, I'm all ears. Thanks.
