Not to jump in on this thread with another question but why would there be sand and stop leak in the coolant?

Personally I've always thought it was SAND...others say its Stop Leak...
either way it made my coolant level next to impossible to read in the
degas bottle.

Im told that either ford/international isnt washing the casting sand from
the engine blocks (before or after assembly)...and im told that these days
its common for MOST mfg's to add stop leak...either way
I dont want it in my system...and it CANT be good <over time>.

ALL the big diesels run a coolant by-pass filter...imo its cheap insurance
and will likely extend the life of the water pump.

addtionally theres speculation that all this stop leak and/or sand could
be plugging the oil cooler and quite possibly be a contributing factor to
over heated & cracked EGR Coolers.

either way...its CHEAP INSURANCE as far as im concerned.

Well, I just picked up my truck from the Ford dealer. They ran a bunch of tests on it and came down to the oil cooler being bad. For some reason I felt like it wasn't sand and additive. Now I gotta tear apert the top end and remove the intake.

Any pointers before I tear this thing apart?

Thanks!

wonder what tests they ran to determine this....
the only one im aware of is the 20* differential (between
oil temp & coolant temp)

id be concerned the coolant has mixed w/ the oil too !

when you pull this mutha' apart take pics...id love to see the "sludge"
that apparently some have "poured" outta the oil coolers.

check that egr cooler while youre there...it might well be cracked !

Take a sample of your oil and send it to Blackstone Labs to have them run their tests on it. If you have oil in your water, you'll probably have water in your oil, and they can detect that.

Not true. usually it's ONLY one or the other. If you have oil in your coolant (in most diesel engines) the problem is most commonly the oil cooler, because the oil is higher pressure than the water. If you have coolant in your oil, it is usually a block/ sleeve/ head problem, water leaking directly into the crankcase.
To see if you have water in the oil, let the engine stand overnight (or longer) loosen the pan plug, and drain a little oil out. If there is much of any water in the oil, you will see it come out first. :)

I picked up my oil cooler today and I am starting the project in the morning. Any info. can help me out. I believe I have to remove all components above my intake manifold including the intake manifold.

Does the egr cooler sit on top of the oil cooler? Is there any way to test the egr cooler just for safety reasons?

Anything else I need to know?

Thanks!
