Ok, I believe my truck is either in puberty, or revolt after my SVO converstion :dunno Going down the road today I realized the O/D switch isn't working. Tried everything, wiggled, pressed gently, rammed.. nothing Then (cause this kinda stuff makes me crazzy) through out the day as I continued to try it started working for a small time. I forgot went about my day only to later have it not work again. -mad

Do these switches freakout or is it more sinister

Yes. The wiring that goes to the switch gets kinked/broken/worn. You have to kinda tear the steering cloumn apart to find the wires and chek them all and replace it if its bad.

I dont have the instructions handy, Im going off old posts on TDS, but I know this occurs.

Clayton, you can't catch a break! Sorry to hear this. I often wonder if this problem is caused by driving with the right hand on the gear selector (like I often do), or from other more subtle things ??

I think it is from the constent movement of the shifter. All manufactures seem to eventually have problems with this.

not to bum you out anymore but... i wanted to buy the rubber boot on the bottom of the shifter and the local dealer here (probably a lie) told me that you could only purchase the whole shifter assembly, that none of it was servicable

hope you have better luck

or do what i did and see if you can get lucky in the junk yard, i found one out of a superduty but.. i think that shifter has been used for awhile, the OBS trucks look just like em so i doubt it would be that hard to find even if you couldn't find a superduty

good luck

I had posted the same problem on the FTE forurm a few weeks ago and was told to look for a hole in the bottom of the key switch housing and use a tool to take off the switch. Well, I tried everything I could think of and could not get the housing off. Any tools, suggestions? Also, what happened to FTE? Cannot seem to get my browser to load the home page anymore and was starting to suffer from withdrawals. but then found this site by accident and am glad it's here, it looks promising.

Thank You,

well, your IGNITION SWITCH does come out. You use a tiny, but long screwdriver, or even a long skinny nail works too. You put your key in the ignition, push the nail into the hole that is located under the steering column, near the bottom of where the ignition switch base would be inside the column. Push the nail while rotating the key and pulling out and the whole switch assembly comes out.

Now, I dont know if you need to do that to get the shifter mechanism apart, but that may have been what the FTE thread meant.

Yes, I was told I would need to take the key switch out so the steering column housing would come off to get to the shift lever and then I could repair the OD wires.

Thanks for the info,
