I wasn't sure where the right place to post this was so I put it here. I need to get keys made for a 97 thunderbird. I have no keys to make a copy from and I can't have a locksmith come to the car (its a long story). I think I can go to a dealership and / or a locksmith with the VIN and the title and have a key made, is that correct? If I can make one that way, does anyone know if a 97 t-bird has the computer chip in the key that would need to be programmed? I didn't think it did but I can't remember.
thanks for any help on this.
If this should be in a different section please move it, I was going to put it in the general SD forum but didnt because its a t-bird.

I don't think they had a chip. You should be able to pull the core out and take that to a locksmith. I did that once on a late 80s truck. They may want proof of ownership but that isn't too difficult to prove.

like i said, its a long story. I dont have access to the car. I need the key made using the VIN so then I can go get the car. I actually have to drive around the general area where I know the car is and find it after I get the key made.

thats basically what it is but. here is the story: My father let my oldest niece drive his t-bird while she is in college. well she started to take advantage of the situation in a huge way. She parks the car anywhere she wants in downtown Boston and racks up between $200 - $400 in parking tickets a month. they get mailed to my fathers house and he has to pay them because if one the big trucks in our business gets pulled over for a DOT check or something, it would be bad news to have all those unpaid parking tickets. my sister (her mother) wont do anything and the niece doesnt return my dads calls. my dad is finally tired of it and my brother and I are going to find the car next weekend when i back home for leave, we just have no keys for it. so in a sense we are the "repo man"
this is why i need to know if the car has the chip or not and if i can get a key made using the VIN and proof of ownership.

Yes. They can make you a key from the VIN, and Yes, you will need proof of ownership

thanks, i figured i could have it made. i have the title so proof is no issue. I was mostly concerned about the possibility of chip in the key because then you have to have the car at the dealership to program the key.

Stay tuned for new episode of

Nieces Gone Wild...........

Sounds like she needs to pick her own hickory stick and bring it back to Uncle Kevin David.
