Now my question on the BTM, is you are still using what Down pipe ?

Wouldnt it just be easier to delete the muffler all together?

on our 7.3
we got a 200-300 F drop in egts when we ditched the stock downpipe for a larger magnaflow system.
aslo found the stock muffler had turned blue from the built up heat at the inlet and sides.
what a world of difference in seat o pants feeling and MPG and temps did we get, going with a free er flowing exhuast

glad to hear the ww wheel went well, i got to get out for one of the Bryan truck fixin parties.

powerboatr,

That was my understanding that by getting the 4 inch Down pipe and getting rid of the stock 3 inch, you would get a improvement across the board. I dont see how just changing the muffler will make such a big diffrence. If I was going to change mufflers wouldnt it just be easier to test by deleting the muffler?

I m not sure this is why I am asking I was reading a article on that other site ( argue fest 5000 ) saying that 3.5 down pipe is optimum and 4 is slightly to large unlesss you do injectors.

Shrug just curious, almost got the funds for my 4inch cat back.

Was a pleasure getting to help out with your truck this past Saturday, indeed was a classic mod party with plenty of trucks to work on but if I recall Bryan and Lance' trucks was the only ones not wrenched on this time around:D

On the subject of Straight pipe versus the Big Truck Muffler I personally prefer the BTM for sound quality in the end but both choices provide the same performance results but some states depending on the safety inspection stations require a muffler to be on the system so I played it safe:sweet

we had a 4" dp
it looked a bit un air flow freindly but i never really felt any loss of tq or power like many have threatend.
if your running the ww and open up the exhaust your only doing good things volumetrically speaking , them naw sayers about proper back pressure, yes its there, the back pressure valve i f i remember correctly runs at about 17 psi for a WOT reading, thats needed to drive the turbo ... remember pressure plus flow creates VOLUME and we want tons of volume
or so to speak but on the outlet side of teh driven vanes we need very little back pressure because it acts like a break which slows down the turbo spinning, which reduces the amount of air we can suck in and pump up to create positive boost, thats why the ebpv works so good as a cheap exhaust break...

then we add a chip or tuner to compensate for our free -er flowing egines and add more fuel
and our WOW factor goes up

so in short
if we can add for airflow/pressure into the combustion side, it allows us to add more fuel which gives us more power
plus more airflow equals lower EGTS. so now we can add more fuel to raise the egts which means we get more power and smiles.
its like a never ending circle
next we could shoot in water vapor to further lower egts which means we can add more fuel , and more wow.
then we reach a point where we need more flowing injectors and a better trimmed HPOP
it never stops, than goodness we got jobs :D

i thnk i see a NEW older 7.3 in my future for a fast grocery getter

I think I am screwing up my point .

Let me try it this way?

Which of these are better and exactly why? and it is worth 300 for a 4inch MBRP vs a 60$ muffler delete at the local shop or even adding just the BTM for 50$???

I am guessing that muffler delete should theoreticaly give you the same performance as a the MBRP 4 inch since you have 0 restriction and your EGTs should drop greatly.

Im not seeing what the advantage to a 4inch with a muffler is vs a 3.5 inch with no muffler.
